if so, about how much?

Have you read the Vista sticky?

yea and it doesnt say anything when disabling it if it will free or release HDD space... it says that it will stop consumption of HDD space and I can do a clean up on restore points and shadows to delete some old restore points.

My understanding is that in Vista, System Restore is implemented using Volume Shadow copy Service (VSS). In other words, it uses the backups that VSS makes anyway, and just marks certain versions of each file as belonging to certain restore points. So, if you want to save disk space, you'll have to turn off Volume Shadow Copy as well as System Restore. At least for Vista Business and Ultimate.
If you have Home Basic or Home Premium, then as I understand it you don't have explicit control over Volume Shadow Copy, so I'm not sure how it works in this case. It may just turn it off if you turn off System Restore... but I'm not really sure.
EDIT: ok, here's some more info: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/...rage-space-usage-size-in-vista-with-vssadmin/
EDIT: It seems that the home basic/premium editions include the underlying VSS stuff, with it on and running, if I'm reading this right... they just don't include the UI to retrieve a previous version of a file independently of a system restore: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/...a-home-basic-and-premium-with-shadowexplorer/ -

Thanks -
It deletes the previous restore points.
By default, system restore uses up to 15% of your hard drive space. -
I think mine has used up more than 15% on mine, anyway I can find out?
