I recently won a new laptop equiped with Vista Family Premium and the first thing I did was to deactivate the automatic windows updates. However, every 2 days when I shut down the computer, I get stuck on the shut down screen and it tells me to wait while windows downloads and configures updates and not to shut down the computer. When that happens it usually takes between 5 and 20 minutes to shut down the computer and that's time I don't have when class is over and I need to go to the next one.
How do I deactivate these unrequested windows updates? I already deactivated the automated updates but apparently vista simply doesn't care what I think.
Since I won this laptop I don't have a proof of purchase and thus can't subscribe to the Windows 7 updates.. I'm stuck with Vista.

Isn't there an option to just shut down without installing updates?
-
That's what I'm doing.
But every once so often it will freeze up in the blue-green-ish windows shutting-down windows and tell me to wait while windows configures the updates. I could understand this if it were following an update installation but I don't download and/or install any windows updates or any other updates for that matter. I deactivated them all.
It's really annoying -

Why not just let Windows do the updates? It seems like you are trying to swim upstream.

Yeah, just let the updates go. If you do turn it off while it's updating, it could damage the OS.
Why not just put it to Sleep between classes? That's what I do, and it works fine. It generates very little heat, and takes up very little battery life. If you want to take that even further, you could put it to Hibernate. -
I've had updates take forever. No idea why.
I ended up just rebooting it a few times to get it out of its system. Eventually went back to normal.
Your guess is as good as mine. -
Surfasb, why do you have such unusual avatars?

on topic:
yeah, enable updates, and do updates. they're good for you. maybe then, it will stop getting stuck. if not, you'll have to maybe clean the update-download-folder and reset the updates. c:\windows\softwaredownloads or something, i'm unsure right now, no vista at hand. -
Edit: It's not a pear anymore... -

haven't said anything about a pear. still a green fruit with a smile on it...

BTW, you can force Vista to shut down quickly, but do so at your own risk.
Cheers... -

this won't help for the pending updates that somehow got possibly stuck. and i'd suggest to better find out what's blocking the shutdown that just saying "if something blocks, kick it", which this tweak does.

I just thought I'd let him know another option, if he should so choose. -
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
sure. except that, with a big chance, it's no help in his case. i don't think the timeout happens while "installing updates..", but only afterwards, where there is the "shutting down..." displayed..
i still wait for some way to have an integrated protocol displaying what blocks the shutdown (or boot process, too), to find and solve such issues easily. -
Man, your country must be one huge sausage party if a brunette is considered "unusual." -

Same chick as the current avatar. -
Poor OP, trying to get help on a 15min shutdown, and all you guys talk about is your avatars haha.
I suggest not toying with windows updates. I had to reformat because my windows update got broken and I couldn't install SP2, office, or anything of the like. You have no idea how wrong windows update can go lol -

you can delete the whole windows update folder, afterward it should work again, but as the op doesn't post anymore, we can continue to talk about alizée
Vista takes 15 minutes to shut down
