I have a brand new dv9500t, and its great this is my first notebook and vista is also new to me. When I first got my notebook I removed all the bloatware it came with and installed some programs (CCCleaner,Mozilla, Steam, and a few others) according to a topic regarding what to do when you first get your notebook.

I also followed a similar topic which had a list on the top ten performance tweaks to do. Well down to the problem now every time I boot up my notebook it goes through the usual things, loading up the with the HP logo, then it goes to the vista orb in the center of the screen and then to a screen with a welcome in the center and a small spinning orb like its loading something.

Sometimes it stays on this welcome screen for a good 20 seconds and eventually it finally goes to my desktop. But alot of times after the long initial wait with the welcome screen it goes to a completely blank black screen which sometimes last 10-15 seconds or so, which after brings up my desktop.

I read that something might be holding it up so I decided to check my automatically started up programs and decided to take steam off the list. I rebooted and it started up with no problems and fast like it use to with out the long welcome vista screen and the blank black screen but, today the problem has returned.

Why is it doing this and what can I do to get it back to normal?

I think the best solution is to install XP and wait untill Vista is worth the time. I see no benefit in it. Especially if XP SP3 will have a DX10 like thing. Plus there are plenty of ways to make XP as pretty as Vista, and have double the performance of it. Vista just makes me angry. Good luck in Microsoft's hell. ;P

Yeah I find the only good thing out of vista so far is the nice look of the interface.

But for the mean time does anyone how I can fix this problem?? If the problem does persist I may have to just opt for XP.

This XP/Vista argument is so outdated...you boys sound like the last few to hold on to your XP. Its out, gone, pass tense...

No longer do you have to watch your system freeze and crash every time you use it.

But to the task at hand....

Your problem is no different with Vista than it would have been with XP. You sound like you have manually gotten rid of what you believe to be the bloatware. The problem is, especially with programs like SonicCinema/McAfee etc, there are now several registry entries or boot commands that cannot find the program. So what happens??? It hangs as it seeks the program until that command times out.

If you are going to rid your system of bloatware, reformat and rebuild by reinstalling just the drivers and files needed, these ofcourse being the most updated ones.

    Good Luck!!!

I had the slow start up problem with Vista. I love the new OS and I really wanted to keep it. Putting in an extra 2 gig made all the difference. Now the machine runs surperbly.

I've used McAffee for over 5 years now, and I have to say I've never had any problems- I don't notice any ram performance differences with it, compared to my desktop which doesn't have it. I have also never had an infeceted machine while installed.

    this is just ridiculous advice.

the problem is you mucked your system up. rather than all that bs you did, you should just do a clean install.

I found this thread while looking for a solution to the same problem. I am a technician at a major computer store and I deal with numerous HPs on a daily basis. This is a problem with almost all of the HP laptops with vista. Probably ALL of them at some point. The problem has NOTHING to do with removing/not removing programs or start up items. I've seen it with both. The problem would NOT be the same with XP, as I have removed some or all startup programs from these HPs running XP and Vista. Its NOT vista, either. I have determined through intelegent reasoning that the problem is with HP software. It has never happened on a non-HP laptop in my experience and has not happened with HP laptops which have been reformated with a clean vista install.

I have yet to find a fix, only a work-around. While sitting at this black screen of nothingness for what seems like an eternity do a ctrl+alt+del and then go to task manager (or ctrl+shift+esc to go directly). End the process explorer.exe. Go to File > New Task and run explorer.exe. Now the desktop will load almost instantly. Unfortunately the problem may still occur next time you boot. I will repost if I find a perminate fix.

Btw, XP fanboys, I understand if you don't like vista, but when someone asks how to fix a vista issue it is not helpful in the least to simply post "get XP".

    Nice info!

What HP software? QuickLaunch? Security software? 3d protection? I have them all. But there is one way to know EXACTLY what is taking so much time.

Go to Additional Tools under Performance and Tools. Check yellow exclamations. Check events details that give you EXACT time in milliseconds what took Vista so long. You'll be amazed. Then go and see critical events in Event Viewer under Microsoft/Windows/Diagnostics-Performance. Check their times.

    Like in my case:
    Intel Wireless 5,6 s
    Radeon kernel 17 s
    HP Accelerometer 3,8s
    Windows gallery 25 s!

Heh, now things look clearer. :)

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Ivan

I dont know which HP software specificly, all I know is that I see it daily on brand new HPs and it even happened on mine. I have never seen it on one which has been formated with a vista disk instead of an HP restore. Needless to say, thats what I did for mine.

Are you all sure that the problem is solely on HP's software?? I honestly didn't appreciate all the bloat ware I found on mine, including all the HP software like quick launch, Health Center etc...

But thanks to all who replied I will try these suggestions.

I forgot to mention once again. I've noticed that sometimes it all loads up normally and very fast like it did the first day. Then rite after I shutdown after using it and boot it up it goes back to the same thing.

    Network disks? Networking? Wild guess.

    Offline files?

Have you checked the Event Viewer?

SP1 RC? It seems to help many people.

I hope you will solve it somehow.

Seems like the problems comes and goes. I really don't know what exactly may be causing it.

lol, It's DX9.0L that allows games without DX9.0C librairy to run in DX9.0c, no such thing as DX10 and it won't be there in the end.

Double the performance is only true if you have 512-1GB RAM or a 1.4GhZ P4, or on prior 2004 games

Best way to speed up Vista: Simple Formula

Clean Install -> Only Install drivers that are necessary -> follow this guide -> use it for several days for SuperFetch to do its magic. -> Start using Vista with no complains.

For those of us who find Vista to be a buggy, clunky, cranky OS, is isn't a laughing matter.

After having Vista Premium on my M1530 for a week, and dealing with (ridiculously) slow network file transfers, problems resuming from sleep/hibernation -- all issues I just don't have time for MS to fix - I installed XP Pro. For my efforts, I have a better performing, more stable laptop. I keep Vista around in a dual-boot configuration, but when I want to get work done, I boot into XP.

If Vista works for you, and you have time to deal with its idiosyncrasies, power to you. For those who don't, XP is a perfectly legitimate alternative.

With this slow boot up time, do you think the vista sp1 will fix this issue?

Sp1 doesn't fix it, it's pretty much the same after vista recreates the data it needs to shutdown and start up faster.
