New version of Windows next year, says Gates
Miami: Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates said on Friday he expected the new version of Windows operating software, code-named Windows 7, to be released "sometime in the next year or so."

What do u think now?
Was Vista really a failure then?
Obivously if Vista was good they wouldnt have released a new OS
So what do we do now?
Wait n watch the release of another OS & then Throw away Vista??
-
-
Gates ain't CEO no more. I don't trust him.
-
Interesting. I thought this wasn't due out for a good several years.
-
If that happens I will definitly switch to Mac and never look back.. We get burned all these upgrades to line Microsfot's pockets. they don't even really give u a good upgrade path. And then they wonder why there are software pirates. this needs to be fixed..............OH I forgot it was fixed with Linux but the software developers are too stupid to know a good thing when they see it. ... lets see make programs for linux........ don't have to pay Microsoft Royalty or any license fees etc..etc..etc...

Xp Fanboy!!! Xp 4 Life!!!!
-
Well, perhaps they just don't want to repeat the mistake it was to have around 6 years between releases as the customers get so familiar with one system that they are unlikely to move on to a newer one
-
I dont regret upgrading to Vista from XP. I prefer Vista over XP any day. Just like I did with Vista though, I will wait a bit before upgrading.
-
This was in yesterday's News Bits...there is some question as to what exactly Gates meant, seeing as he said "a new version" and not Windows 7. Remember that what Microsoft has been saying is three years after Vista, aka, 2010 (maybe late 2009). Some think it might be Vista Second Edition, like Windows 98 Second Edition. At any rate I'm waiting to see someone say more explicitly that they meant a new version of Windows in 2009.
And, though I don't think Vista was a good OS at all, that doesn't mean Microsoft wouldn't release a new OS two years after a good operating system. After all, ME came two years after the good Windows 98 operating system.
But I already made my decision and threw away Vista. -
So Vista = the new Windows ME? Hooray.
-
We've known that for a long time.
It's not because it's a failure, Blackomb (which is now W7) was supposed to be released in 2003-4.... SP2 replaced that. XP wasn't meant to do 6 years
I see W7 Beta 1 in the beggining of 2009 and the final release at the begining of 2010, which is 3 years after Vista, remember that. -
Remember, he said "next year or so." I'd wait until they get closer to launching it before making any claims about when it will be released.
-
I'm not crying. I get my operating systems for free. Thank god for msdnaa.
-
Also remember that 6 months ago W7 was only a command-line HTTP Server.
But since W7 is 99.9% sure to use as much or more memory than Vista, the Vista haters will become Windows 7 haters -
Vista was just a Beta OS to test if they can Really Successfully copy MAC OSX....so now they ll do a combo of copy+ innovate to create a successful W7
Once u make a mistake... u can only rectify it... and the rectification will be done by releasing Windows 7
Vista was just a Beta OS of the new generation of 3D interface based OS -

So, several years on the Microsoft timescale should have this out around 2011 or 2012, right?
-
Think about it really.....next year? I don't think that that is possible. And if it does happen then all hell will break loose from everyone who switched from XP to Vista
-
All hells won't break loose, if you really think about it, with the additional year, Vista will have a good two years of lifespan, which isn't really all that short. Besides, choosing which OS to use is a choice, even is Microsoft came out with another OS, I for one doesn't have to switch to it, and probably will not unless it offers some amazing improvements.
-
not many switched from XP to Vista... most new comps purchased comp with Vista... so no choice!
NO CHOICE = MONOPOLY -
Okay...but lets say they decide to abandon all support of previous OS's in an effort to get things rolling with x64 (from a consumer standpoint only, not business). There will be alot of people who will be angry that they wasted their money
-
Really? What's the percentage of people who actually bought Vista and upgraded from an old OS? Vista came with my laptop. It was free. I've used it for over a year now, and it runs great. Why the hell would I cry if Microsoft decided to move on?
Is it that I'm insecure and get sad when people aren't doing the same thing I am?
Is it that Vista will now explode, killing my family since Microsoft decided to move on?
Or is this one more of nocturnal's "Vista suxorx and i no spel" flamebait threads? -
I am a lucky one I can get new Windows OS for $20 so doesn't really bother me.
-
u kiddin me? where do u see me flaming ?
This is an informative thread..
We are discussing the Impact of New OS in our lives.
U are behaving insecure as if u ll feel Petrified when Windows 7 is released.
WE dont lose anything.. but it Does matter what OS is released by Microsoft. -
Indeed we are.
-
There's a difference between having choices and no choices. You do have CHOICES because you can easily purchase a XP CD, transfer retail XP license from another PC at home, or even you own the Business Edition of Vista you can downgrade to XP. This path does not limit to XP vs. Vista, you can in fact install any favor of OS you like including Linux and Mac, these are CHOICES.
What you are saying is just ignorance, people being lazy that's all...
Not gonna happen. Look at XP, Microsoft is "forced" to extend the support period due to popular demands. We will be fine.
-
In my opinion they should have used Vista to bring 64bit mainstream. We should make the jump from x86 to x64 within the next 2 years.
-
Well, I would use Windows 7 just as I've used Vista; it works, and it's workable. If Windows 7 is the same or worse than Vista in regards to what I value in an OS, I might just install XP Pro or MCE on my comp, and dual-boot with Ubuntu, but I expect Windows 7 will be just fine and dandy. Vista isn't all that bad, and if Windows 7 is any better, it's all good.
-
The business sector will be more resistant to change compared to the home enthusiast crowd. There's billions of dollars at stake here. XP and Vista will be here to stay for a while yet.
And the news of W7 (a.k.a. Blackcomb/Vienna) being released in 2009 is old. It was speculated on Microsoft blog a few months ago. Gates simply confirmed the speculation.
I say "New O/S? Bring it on!"
-
Heh. Even if that does happen, I'm definitely gonna have my x86 comp still up and running for a DOS game machine.
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
From reading articles about this, Windows 7 should turn out pretty good. I like the idea of being able to start out small and add the accesories you want. Wonder how it would run on a 6 year laptop?
-
Really,. then I suggest modifying the title of the thread, and actually include good information on the original post and not a personal point of view which I will quote:
Obviously this is not any new information at all. The release of Windows 7 by 2009-2010 has been discussed multiple times on this forum, ever since the release of Windows Vista. Sure, they finally made it semi-official, but does that information give us anything we didn't know before?
From the start Vista was supposed to be part of Windows 7. The whole thing got pretty good so they decided to release it before Windows 7. Now that Windows 7 is almost complete, I don't see why it shouldn't be launched, and furthermore I don't see why an early launch of Windows 7 would suggest in any way that Vista was a failure. -
True true. But what about the rest consumers? I mean we can't be using 32bit forever...
-
It's one of his...
Personally, I probably will be switching when the public beta is released, like I did for Vista. If 7 doesn't have any problem with my college's network that is
EDIT: Woops, missed 3 pages.
@Jayayess: Windows Server works like that. It could be nice to implement that on home OS BUT
People who aren't geeks and that are going to self install will come whining at how much W7 sucks on the internet -
Well, if we must progress, we must progress. I'm just saying that I'll keep a 32-bit OS around for my beloved DOS games.
-
Yep. I'm not sure what the fuss is all about. Improvement is good. If you don't want to upgrade to an improved product you certainly don't have to. But it's nice to know it's available for those who do want to.
-
Vista is such a failure... D: *Cries*
-
This was normal before XP....
-
No it wasn't. When XP came out, everyone had a very long cry session in the back of the pantry. Wait...
-

Oh please! Even those who installed ME have by now most likely successfully been brought into the present.
I ran XP early on and up until the point I bought a Vista PC. I am now on Vista/SP1.
And if I have learned anything in 30+ years in computing it is that the future has not happened yet. -
Well, good. We don`t want 6 years of Vista as we had with XP
-
AKAJohnDoe Mime with Tourette's
No worries. Didn't the Mayans predict the end of the world in 2012 or 2016?
-
The Mayan calender stopped at 2012...
-
Lol.
I will add, however, that in the big scheme of things, Vista won't appear that bad. Seriously.
-
Vista isn't a failure just because they're releasing a new OS so soon. Microsoft has chosen to return to a normal release cycle of 2-3 years, as XP was the flagship OS for 7 years or so. If you look at Microsoft's release cycle prior to XP, they released a new OS every 2 or 3 years. If anything XP was an anomaly.
XP's long life is also partly the reason why Vista has had so much trouble dethroning it, and why so many people were quick to criticize the OS (including myself, until I figured that drivers were to blame). -
Good point, bc135.
-
I completely agree, and if they make it widely available, i might make Windows 7 my switch to 64bit.
-
Windows 7 will end up being what 98SE was to 98?
-
Maybe, who knows. Only time will tell.
-
I really like Vista...it has grown on to me. Windows 7...I'll just probably buy a new PC with it preloaded. ;o
-
Windows 7 is supposed to be new code. A ground-up build, so it's not going to be like Vista SE.
-

I would be surprised to see 32-bit operating systems persist past this decade.
Vista users will cry now: Windows 7 confirmed
