sorry for the bunch of questions

im not sure if someone has already posted this before, but i want some answers...

ive been searching for a new laptop, and im pretty sure i know what i want...but i forgot about something rather important thing, the OS.

so my question would be, should i wait for the Win7 to come out or the Vista is fine for major modeling softwares (mainly Cad apps).

    is win7 compatible with vista?
how much more expensive will it be?
what features make win7 be better than vista?
is it true that win7 is merely a vista os debugged?? (i read that the other day)
is it worth the wait or should i get the laptop now?
will win7 be able to run XP softwares and apps?? (such as old games and CS2)
what is it with the thousand versions of win7?
which version is better for modeling?
how much ram does win7 consume? (vista needs 1gig to run only and another to run other apps)
will actual high-end laptops and business-type laptops be able to run win7 or would the upgrade mean a new lap?

need some expert opinions, since i havent found anything yet that really helps me out.

im buying laptop online, so availability is no problem. (which brand is going to launch win7?)

thanks in advance for your replies, they will be greatly appreciated.

Microsoft has announced that anyone that buys a computer w/ Vista after July 1 will get a free upgrade to Win7. Double check my facts.

MS is trying to keep the drivers for Vista compatible with Win7. Of course, not every single Vista driver is going to work. The vast majority will.
So far the cost looks similar. If it's a few bucks off in either direction it's not enough to matter.
First off, you seem to be implying here that Vista is "bugged." I have Vista installed on several machines, desktops and laptops, and I don't see "bugged." I see a stable, reliable OS that is fast and does the tasks I need and want to do, and does them with a modern and stylish interface. Of course, the majority of my machines are hand-picked or hand-built by me. To be quite frank, if your PC is a piece of junk, Win7 won't magically polish that turd. Win7 will not make junkboxes run like supercomputers.

Secondly, Your first question is not a good question. "Better" is subjective. What makes red better than blue? What makes A better than Q? "Better" is a poor word to use. I know what you want to hear. You want to hear Win7 is faster, more "reliable", does some magical thing that somehow transcends what an OS is supposed to do. No. You won't hear that. Win7 takes the Vista base and enhances it with interesting GUI tweaks, underlying code tweaks, and general optimizations and changes.
Win7 is months away. If you want to wait, wait.
There's probably hundreds of thousands of apps for Windows XP. Are you asking a small notebook forum if EVERY SINGLE APP EVER MADE will run? As far as "old games" and "CS2", there's lots of old games. How old? 1984? You want to run an old 2-color game off a 5.25" floppy disk?
Show me "the thousand versions of win7". Not the 5 or so that have been announced, but the thousand. Go for it.
Modeling what? Different software will run better on different things. The maker of the modeling software will tell you what OS to use for their software.
If you're running modeling apps, you likely have more than 1GB. The day of the 100MB OS overhead are over. They ended a long time ago. Win7, like Vista, OS X, and a comparatively configured Linux, all take a lot of RAM to run and this isn't going to change.
Silly question. Win7 will have requirements similar to Vista, and Vista x64 runs perfectly fine and fast on my 2.5 year old Dell E1705 laptop. It wasn't a "high-end" or "business-type" laptop when it was new.

That's not true. Win7 beta has been a free download from MS for weeks. If you haven't downloaded and installed it yet, that's your problem.

Where did you hear this because I've never heard of this plan. I just bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium in August '08 and it would be pretty amazing if Microsoft offered to upgrade my OS to 7 for free.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's actually for people who buy a new computer on or after July 1st, 2009.

It should have been worded something like this; "Microsoft has announced that anyone that buys a computer w/ Vista after" Jan 30, 2007 "will get a free upgrade to Win7".
