So I've recently noticed this problem. Not sure what brought this on (perhaps triggered by a more recent windows update?).
When I wake up from sleep mode, my USB flash drive(s) are unresponsive for like a full minute. At which point, they start working normally.
I don't see this problem with my USB HDD (western digital passport), which remains on even when the laptop goes to sleep. So when it wakes up, it is still responsive.
But for some reason, my flash drive (my USB mouse works fine as well) is not responsive.
Anyone encounter this problem before or know how to fix it?
Help greatly appreciated!

I have something like this happen as well. My external Blu-Ray drive does a power cycle every time my HTPC wakes up to do a recording.
You could try enabling "Selective USB suspend" under power options > advanced but I have also heard this can break suspend so test it a few times to see what happens. -

Just another external medium.
Selective USB suspend doesn't seem to help at all. -
There is a "USB wake from sleep" problem in a lot of Vista hardware.
Check your manufacturer for a patch. It may be laptop-specific, but it's just a reg edit, so I don't know for sure. Lenovo's "driver matrix" sites usually have it. You could unpack the reg tweak and look at what it wants to do.
Did you say what brand your laptop is? That would help. -

The registry key referred to above can be found at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\usb
Try changing the value of ForceHcD3NoWakeArm to 0 (or to 1 if it's already set to 0).
Let us know if this helps! -
A patch from Lenovo, but should work with any Vista machine.

I have a Sony Fw series, SONY just posted a patch for this is about 3 days ago (exact issue you described) - suggest checking the Sony Support site for your model number.
