That says it all! You will have to have a 64-bit processor in order to play back commercial Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs. Why? Copy protection.

Saw that on dailytech too. A good reason to wait for merom ^^;;

Boo! Hiss!
Not that I care for HD. Only Hollywood suits would think people would re-purchase all their new DVDs
But still. Boo! Hiss! -

Well, if all they produce are crap movies like Snakes I won't even need to bother upgrading any hardware or purchase HD & BR movies...
I can't even remember the last time I bought a music CD...why? because most are crap. -

Same thing with music; yes, a lot of music CDs are crap, but there are also plenty of artists out there in all sorts of musical genres doing good stuff. -
well...Microsoft do want people to buy new hardware. That's for sure
Maybe it is time for a completely new mobile platform, I do think it is time. It is a good thing and may well increase demand for 64bit. -
Hmm so if I want Vista, which I don't, and I want to play Blu-Ray/HD-DVD's (and of course have figured out which one is actually going to end up being the standard), which I'm not sure I do, I need to get a 64 bit processor...
Right... okay... put me down for 10 then -
In some ways, it sucks. But other times, I know that MS is doing this to help bring in the new era of computing. You gotta do something to move things along. What I'm wondering though is what all those people with the Sony and Toshiba laptops are doing? They're just running 32-bit processors and OSs. So if Vista is the roadblock, this could be a big reason for a LOT of people not to switch. Which is sad.

Microsoft is doing it because the paranoid movie industry told them to, not because they want people to upgrade. As the dailytech article says, they've been pressured to do it because there are too many ways to circumvent their copy protection under 32-bit Windows.
Nevertheless, it's good to finally see a bit of a push towards 64 bit. Just a shame it comes from such a moronic direction like copy protection and DRM.
But honestly? Who cares? I don't have any plans to buy HD-DVD or BluRay movies. Both because I don't need it. (There are other ways than optical media to store movies, and the DRM on these formats is getting ridiculous) -
but that is just me...
bottom line is...yes i like some movies (LOTRs, SW, etc) but this HDCP, BR, HD stuff is just too much right now -
Right now they have put a knife in their back (movie industry), such actions will only IMO make breaking this protection (altough technically it's already broken) more urgent matter...
Vista will require 64-bit for BRD and HD-DVD
