I just replaced my HDD for my Dell Inspiron 1520. I reloaded Vista and it went ok (except for the wifi connection not working but that's another problem). I allowed Windows get updates, but after the new updates were installed the system would not boot. I cannot boot into safe mode. I tried repairing problem with media install CD but the only option is to restore to an earlier point (which is without the updates). I did this last night and then updated Windows this morning to end up in the same position once again.

Does anyone have any ideas to what is going on? Solutions?

Well obviously for now, just restore back to before you installed the updates, so that your computer is usable. Check which updates they are.

Just thinking - the moment you use the Windows System restore you end up messing up a lot...

If you have time, instal each update one by one, see where the error occurs.

Then maybe clean everything up by doing another clean isntal and avoid that update.

Actually the system lost power and then restarted into Vista ok after gaining power. It later failed to restart after I was in Vista (Windows recovery error). If I force a hard shut down it will usually start Vista. If I do a normal restart from Vista it won't reboot. ...... I've tried several times now and if I shutdown and turn system back on, then Vista starts. Restarting from Vista causes the problem.

I'm not sure why there is a difference between restarting and shutdown and physically turning on. I thought this was the same thing, but I'm not an expert.

There were 71 Window updates. Is there an easy way of exporting the list of the updates (I can't cut/paste list)?

    Thanks.

One way is to take screen shots and then type it out... :(

71 updates...I'm sure there's a Service Pack in there which is causing the problem. 64 bit?

I'm getting a list of the Window updates.

I saw another post at http://thevistaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=45650 and I typed
    %SystemRoot%\System32\shutdown.exe /r /t 0 /f
from the command line to shutdow and restart the system. It did not work. The above post mentioned there may be something wrong with the shutdown process??? Unfortunately the other questioner from the other post had opposite results from shutting down this way so I couldn't follow through...

Will it start in safe mode after updates? If so, you can point at bad drivers being the culprit.

I ran into a very similar error not too long ago and it turned out to be a bad video driver was loaded before the updates--removing the bad video driver and installing the newest one after updates made the issue go away

I still wouldn't rule it out...I'd roll back the updates, update all drivers (especially video, chipset and audio), then update your laptop 10 or so at a time

Perhaps you could try download the 'failed' updates directly from MS website?

Yeah, I just tried the failed updates from the MS standalone download center. I got the same message that the "updates did not apply" for my system.

Also, service pack 1 was not part of the updates or the original installation. I thought this would have shown up through the auto updates. After I got SP1 installed "restart" has been working properly (booting Vista up) instead of only working after a shutdown procedure.

Simply solution, but lots of time. Thanks for input from the forum.
