    Hi Guys,

I am having problems with both sleep and hibernate.

1 - My computer is setup to hibernate when I close the lid. But most of the time when I close the lid, the computer simply stays on, even with the lid closed.

2 - When I force a hibernate with button or start menu, it hibernates but resumes back right away. Doesn't stay hibernated.

3 - If I try to set the computer to sleep through the start menu, the computer restarts instead of going to sleep.

I have looked around but still have not found a solution.

    I appreciate your help.

    Thanks

Laptop model? Operating system? When did the problem start?

I think this never quite worked right. So I would say the problem started since I got the computer. 2 months ago.

    Thanks

Go to System; Device manager and uncheck all the wake options for stuff like mice, modem etc.

Example; expand Mice and other pointing devices; right click properties; click the Power Management tab and then deselect Allow this device to wake the computer; click OK.

I hope this will work, it did in my case where my friggin mouse prevented Sleep.
    Cheers.

Sleep and hibernate are tied to your video hardware. Try re-installing/updating your video driver.

Go into "Advance Power Settings" of the activated power mngt profile, and check/modify the settings for "Power Button and Lid" --> "Lid Close Action" and "Start Menu power button".

Check the Scheduled Task log, for system wakeups.

I have done that already like suggested in other threads. Every device that had a wake up on option I have unchecked. Including wake up on lan.

Thanks, but that's pretty basic, I have already checked that. They are setup the way I want to, and it's not related to that since I get the same errors when forcing a sleep or hibernate through the start menu.

    Thanks

Ok, disable/reenable hibernate by going into CMD, and type powercfg /hibernate off, then powercfg /hibernate on.

Also in cmd --> powercfg -devicequery wake_armed

Whichever devices are shown --> powercfg -devicedisablewake " name of device from above cmd"

Also check the scheduled task log, for system wakeups.

Logs are usually the best place to start checking for the source of mysterious behaviour. Check also to see if anything's showing up in your event logs.

If this has happened since you bought the laptop, you need to contact Dell.

I just did all this like you syggested

I also checked the bios / power management, and the onlu option there is for usb wake up, and it's turned off

I also went to device manager and made sure that no devices are setup to wake up computer

    Let me clarify 2 things:
    - computer DOES go into hibernation, but it comes back from hibernation right away. Its not staying hibernated.

    - WHen set to sleep, computer restarts.

Not sure what else to try now.

    Thanks

First, make sure you have the latest BIOS version available for your model.

Then, in BIOS, disable any hardware not actually on the machine. (This may include WWAN, parallel/serial port, etc.)

Also, is this the Windows that came pre-installed on the machine? The Vista installation that came pre-installed on my Dell Latitude was a bit screwy. Fortunately Dell bundles the Windows disc... so you could try reinstalling... and only install a minimum of stuff you need. Let it grab the current drivers via Windows Update, and anything important that it doesn't get you can download from Dell.

I also suggest going into Device Manager and disabling any devices that you've never used on this machine. (If you ever need it, you can re-enable the device in 10 seconds.) This may include modem, firewire, smart card, PCMCIA/Expresscard.

You might also search/post in the Dell forum (if you haven't already) to see if anyone else with your model has had this problem.

Hi, I have tried a bunch more things and I still have the same problem.

BTW, I forgot to mention, my vista installation was fresh. I did after i received the notebook.

    Anyway, I updated my BIOS
I also turned off certain hardware on the BIOS, such as LAN, Bluetooth, media card reader and other stuff I don't use.

I also disable all these things I don't use directly on Device manager.

I still have the same problems. This is like a mistery!

    Anything else I can try?

    Thanks

    skuba , Try this

    Code:
    powercfg -a
it will tell if your system does support standby/hibernate

    more info

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929658

also did you use any cleanup tools, if yes then it would have cleared the hiberfil.sys and it might cause some issue , so try disabling and enabling hibernation

    Code:
    powercfg -h off
    powercfg -h on

THe following sleep states are available on this sytem: Standby (S3) Hibernate Hybrid Sleep

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
    Standby (S1)
the system firmware does not support this standby state

    Standy (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state

No, I didn't. But this is not the issue. The computer DOES go into hibernation, but the problem is that it turns back on right away instead of waiting for me to press the power button. So the computer hibernates, but then wakes up and the computer remains on.

BTW: It doesn't have to do with the Lid. I set it so the lid open won't do nothing as fas as sleep or hibernate. This was part of my troubleshooting.

    Thanks

So, I tried all that stuff. Sometimes hibernate works and stays hibernated. Many times it's still not working. Going into hibernation and right back from hibernation. Sleep still don't work.

    I am going craaaaaaaazy!

If it has happened since you got the computer, and you have only had it for 2 months, have you tried contacting Dell?

You may still be under Warranty.

I told the OP to contact Dell in my second post, but never received any sort of reply.
