i've yet another problem with Vista, well, it's not too much of a problem as i've figured an odd workaround.... BUT!
when i first purchased a Toshiba laptop for presentation and stuff... i remember when i plugged in an audio jack into the audio port, sound would immediately be transferred from the built-in speakers to the headphones.
this no longer happens.
after i had once downgraded to XP, and recently formatted and reinstalled Vista... (i'm on SP1)... i have noticed that when i plug in headphones into the laptop, sound continues to come out from the speakers unless i go into control panel, and into sound options, and set "headphones" as default, only then will sound come out through the headphones?
did Vista intentionally do this? i wouldn't think so... i can't confirm at this very moment, but my other laptop (which i recently formatted) didn't do this when it was on SP1 also... (i'm sure it didn't)
anybody know about this??

mine does not do that, indeed, I do not have headphones as default.
When you reinstalled, did you install drivers for you audio card, or just use default windows vista drivers?
START ORB > CONTROL PANEL > SOUND
select SPEAKERS
select CONFIGURE
