I have a Thinkpad T61 w1gb. Using Vista, IE 7 lags, especially when opening a link in a new tab. However, Firefox has no lag and operates very well.

Any suggestions on how to improve the IE7's performance? I've disabled all of the unneeded processes via services.msc and killed all the background bloatware. My new 2gb stick should be arriving from Newegg next week.

    Thanks.

Now that Windows Update works independently of IE7, unless you have to access an outdated site that insists on using IE or ActiveX controls, there's absolutely no reason to use IE at all.

Stick with one of the builds of firefox.

The lag when you open a new tab is IE7 is not on your end, I believe. I experience the same lag, and I know that it is not related to my hardware. I almost think that the delay is intentional. How that would be seen as a "feature" is beyond me, but since I don't use IE, I don't stress over it. ;)

    Firefox + IE Tab > IE7

I haven't used IE on any of my home computers in several years.

Thanks for the replies, though I use Firefox most of the time, I still need IE for certain websites due to ActiveX, etc.

I prefer Opera due to the "New Tab" button and the built-in IRC client.

u might want to look at some tcp tweakings. the lagging could be caused by long wait time for subsequent pages to respond before resubmitting request.
one of many good sources for reference ( http://www.speedguide.net/)

turning off IE7 addons and phishing could also help

    cheers ...

Thanks for the tew tab button tip, but Chatzilla is a seperate window, not a tab and when I launch it, firefox.exe gobbles up 120MB of RAM lol. Nice try though.

EDIT: Trying installing the Cleartype Tuner. There's a nasty bands of color on the letter fringes.
