Anyone tried IE 8 already? How's performance and everything? Does it still have memory leak issue like IE 7?

IE 8 is good with Vista and XP. It is fast, if it is not for the lack of some needed extensions, I would use it full time.

Not clear about the memory leak that you are talking about.

    cheers ...

I've tried it and there does seem to be improvements over 7, but I'm still on Firefox, runs miles quicker than IE8.

    Using it right now.

My conclusion is, that it indeed runs faster than Firefox, Opera, Safari or Chrome. Some people do whine about security stuff, but I never had any problems and it has only crashed once, when some script opened x-number of tabs.

IE8 is very stable for me... except when a website has a Flash animation in it. Sometimes, IE8 (and IE7) would crash when loading those pages. IE8 however is able to recover and resume operation just fine.

I blame Adobe on this, not Microsoft.

I find it funny. "for a more secure browser". IIRC, IE8 has been elected as the fastest and most secure browser. This will probably change in the future but still. Also, I'm pretty sure chrome and FF set themselves as the default browser when you install them.

EDIT: Read more, this is all big BS. "pdate: Okay, I'm partially responsible for this. When installing IE8, I chose Use express settings, which, among things, makes IE the default browser"

I am probably going to try IE8 now.
I have not used it as a primary web browser for a number of years...

Indeed. If you go with Advanced settings, you can actually choose whether to make it the default browser or not. It showed up under Windows Update a few days ago and I installed it. Had no problems with it at all and it seems interesting. The accelerators are especially useful and it's something I'd like to see in FF but as it stands, FF is still my default browser.

Oh no, the end of the world is near... the installer makes IE8 the default browser and you can qucikly change it back to whatever you want. We are all doomed. Doomed I tell you. Quick man the life boats. Women and children first.

    ...sheesh...

THAT is the reason not to try it out? Puhleeeeze.

It only makes it default if you choose express settings, actually.

It's a matter of principle for me. :GEEK:

Same reason I don't use Apple software... it's the attitude behind it. Oh, and Firefox and Opera and so on don't make themselves the default; just like most software, they ask if you want to make them the default. To me it just shows Microsoft is playing cheap because they're desperate, controlling your software preferences with updates. So it really isn't about whether I can change it back, it's about why they did it in the first place. I don't want to be working against my operating system.

That said, I never meant to imply I wouldn't try IE 8. In fact, I would if I ever had the inclination to use IE. ;)

Besides, that post was very tongue-in-cheek, and I'm sorry if it didn't come across that way. :)

I find Apple is the most egregious when it comes to protecting their stuff. That's why I refuse to use Itunes and QuickTime software. Those two are like a cancer and will take over your system if you let them. Microsoft doesn't bother me as much. I guess I got fed up with Apples holier than thou attitude a long time ago. :p

I tried avoiding using iTunes for the longest time but I finally broke down and got an iPhone 3g which necessitated it. I still hate Apple (as a company), but the iPhone is an incredible and capable little device - I think the most capable device I've ever used.

Back on topic - I am really impressed with IE8 and how it uses simple but ingenious bits here and there to make your core browing experience excellent. I like the color coded tabs as well. And...then there's that " mode" too haha (InPrivate mode).

Holier-than-thou is a good way to put it, and Apple is the best at it. You're right, Microsoft doesn't really bother me that way, but things like forcing IE 8 as the default and calling it a critical update... that semi-bothers me. But I'm not saying it's no good. :D

Since a lot of the virus comes from the internet, having a safe and secure browser is essential. IE8 has numerous security updates...etc, that's probably why MS put it as a critical update. And again, since most people's default browser is internet explorer, so upgrading to IE8 and making it the default browser is what most people want anyways. Majority wins most of the times.

On my computer, IE8 is the fastest and one of the cleanest browser. I like the interface as oppposed to the unmodified firefox interface (the old ugly cluttered interface from 10 years ago which are used by fair amount of firefox user)

I finally had a chance to give IE8 a try and I really like it now. So much so that i've made it my default browser. I got tired of the FF 3 crashes which started around 3.0.8 and have progressively gotten worse with each new update.

I'm not a huge fan of toolbars as I find them annoying until I installed MSN Toolbar. It happened by accident when I went to the MS site to download IE8 and I clicked on the get all three (IE8, Sliverlight 2 and MSN Toolbar). What I like about the toolbar is that it has categories such as News/Entertainment/Video/Sports/Money/Autos/Stocks and Weather. Clicking on any of the categories will open another menu for for links on current topics or breaking news.

Like I said i've never been a big fan of toolbars but IMO MS did this one right. The other thing I like about IE8 is surfing in stealth mode i.e. InPrivate Browsing. Also the other thing I like about IE7/8 in Vista is that IE is running in protected mode.

I like IE8 so far. Pages do seem to load faster than in IE7 and the small interface changes are good IMO. Roboform still works (thank god! - I don't know what I'd do without it).

The only issue so far is I use ieSpell add-on and while it still works with IE8, the individual word highlighting as ieSpell is running no longer works for some reason (it worked fine with IE7, but it could be something to do with my system/graphics card driver  ).

I hope an Accelerator gets released soon that adds an in-line spell checker like FF.

My Windows Update installed IE8 couple of days ago.. and while most of people whining about IE8 making itself the default browser..i wonder how come i noticed those two settings which let you choose / not choose the default browser settings.

my default browser is CHROME and i installed IE8 just because it had been ages i used IE..

Many people don't read the "instructions". They just click "next, next, next, next, complete" and then they wonder why IE is the default browser.

I never used many plug ins so i missed a lot of firefox's abilities but or me, this IE8 is a good browser which doesnt seem to crash and pause nearly as much as firefox so for me this is a thumbs up

Do you expect anyone to read those ***** EULA's?
I doubt even Bill Gates himself has read them. I doubt anyone other than a lawer has ever read one. Won't be to supprised if sometime in the future microsoft will put something in there EULA that makes us their slave or something. Just Click "agree"

Who's talking about the EULA? He was talking about the options presented during the install. One of which is to make, or NOT make, IE the default browser.

i suppose even FF ,Chrome ,Opera or any other browser/software gives you an option to take a custom and Express install..

Like when you install picasa,it ask whether to make itself a default software to open all kinda image or only certain kind of..same with irfan view..same goes for Divx, VLC, Winamps..asking to whether olay all kind of files,..of only certain..

why are we stuck at these options..???

I haven't used IE8 for a very long time (I use FF and chrome most of the time). Just wanted to try it out, but found out it was hijacked (redirecting to different sites). I don't know how long it's been there. But after I opened IE8, googled notebook review forums, I was redirected to some other search sites and my anti virus went off. Avast doesn't seem to scan the registry as the files kept coming back. Yep my IE is infected. Anyone know how to remove the virus from the registry or IE? IE is a lot susceptible to infections than other browsers.

Maybe you should remove the IE8 beta and install IE8. IE8 beta was released for "a very long time". IE8 just came out last month, I think.

So I installed IE8 because my automatic update will not stop bugging me to install updates (Ive been ignoring it bc IE8 was one of the updates) and after reading on herre I figured I could just choose the custom installation and install it ans NOT have it set as my default browser. Well....I chose the custom install and it told me to restart the computer so I did and walaa...IE8 was my default browser. I love IE7 too much...so I had to go back into automatic updates and uninstall update IE8...what a hassle..I really wished my IE8 Blocker toolkit from Microsoft worked.

IE7 is just as safe as IE8..if I am wrong can someone explain to me why? Thanks :p

Reinstalled IE8, but it's still infected with the hijacker. FF loads slow now. Avast keeps going off, and that virus keeps coming back. Chrome is the only survivor so far. I'll see if I can do a system restore, but I'll be getting rid of IE8 to avoid activating the virus.

What options would you suggest? We sure don't want to have to select the software to be used for a given file type every time we encounter that type, right? So, that means we need a way to designate a piece of software as the default for opening a given type. With something like Picasa, which can open a large number of types, the two alternatives are to set it as the app for all of those types or a list whereby we can select which types. How else do you see this could be done?

I tried IE8 yesterday on my Vista x64, uninstalled it a few hours later...

Many regular links couldn't even open up, and some links opening up in new tabs didn't work. You had to copy and paste the url in a new tab to get it to work. It was weird... and sucked.
