How do I remove unwanted options from the context / right-click menu in Vista?
I recently installed an audio conversion program that added a bunch of new options to the context menus of audio files. For example, when I right click an MP3, a number of options such as "edit sound file" and "convert to wav" appear. In XP, I could remove these via folder options, but I can't figure out how to do the same in Vista.
-
You uninstall the audio conversion program that added all the new stuff.
-
But.. I want to keep the program installed
-
Registry then.
Name of app?
There's probably a better one that does it that doesn't add new context menu stuff -
"Switch"
I really like it other than the context menu problem. It's lightweight and nice. -
Is there explorer settings somewhere in preferences or something, that you can disable context menu.
-
See if you can remove it in a way similar to this example:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...-folder-on-the-windows-explorer-context-menu/ -
Yes, the setting is unchecked, but the context menu options remain
Thanks, good thought, but unfortunately it was unsuccessful. -
try reinstalling
-
Download autoruns and check the Explorer tab for entries that contain the words "shell" and "context menu" with the program name and/or path to your file. Uncheck those entries.
Be VERY careful with the program. Don't mess around. Stick with the above info. -
1. Did you try to clean your registry via CCleaner or other registry cleaners?
Try them first.
2. What is the current program set to .mp3 to open?
3. Can you post a snapshot? And tell me the name of the program.

It's not a rogue registry entry, so Ccleaner won't do anything, and file associations have little to do with shell changes (unless a previous program added a shell extension for the mp3 extension, but not the case here).

Name of app=Switch

try uninstalling the program. then reinstall it and see if it has a check box to put the options in the right click menu. i know ccleaner does that. so when i install it i just uncheck that option.
-
^ I said that already. >=o
-
Click me.
It worked for me in Windows Vista x64, so it should work out for you. -
no not really you said to
1.reinstall
2.uncheck the box when they were already installed
3. uninstall the app that gives those options, which might not even be an option.
i told him to uncheck the box while it was installing. not the same thing because if he does that it wont install in the 1st place -
after realizing there was a box that lets you do that, when i said reinstall, i thought it was assumed that you uncheck it. ;p
-
yea but sometimes you don't look at it lol. i go through those install questions so fast, usually you don't seem them because you think there part of the user agreement things.
-
oh i slow the installation down because i hate having desktop shortcuts and having it in other unnecessary places. only like in the program folder
-
yea i know what your saying. i usually just drag them into my quick launch bar then delete them off my desktop
-
Wow, thanks for all the help.
I tried reinstalling, but there were no options or checkboxes to modify the explorer / shell / context menu. Also, even when the program was uninstalled, the options remained.
I cleaned the registry w/ Registry Mechanic
The current program set to open an mp3 is Windows Media Player
Ooh! Using this, I was able to remove all but one of the unwanted context menu options!
It's now much better than before, but I'd ideally still like to remove the one remaining option:
Again, thanks for all the help! -
I think...I unlock how to remove any of them. wow!
I don't know why but I really removed it.
It's a series of loop thing again and again
finding what you want to removed.
If your a programmer you understand what i am saying.
Thanks for opening the topic. This is really great add-on for WinBubble.
About the program how does it work?
It's a shareware... I don't want to install that.
My laptop is 100% freeware and legal. -
