I will be getting Vista OS and I wanted some help on which defensive / system software to download for it. Is the system tools for Vista great? Or types of spyware or antivirus? I have mozilla on my XP and it works great. Are there any recommendations?

Vista firewall and defender and Avast - going on 2 years with no issues. Running SpywareBlaster at start!

    Keep doing so

    cheers ...

I too am using Comodo and Avira. These are perhaps my favorite firewall/antivirus programs. I'd definitely recommend them.

What else did you use on XP? An open-ended query like this really has no final answer or end. Perhaps if you tell us what extras you have installed and used on XP, recommendations for corresponding functionality could be made for Vista.

I personally use NOD32 (Smart Security since about 6 months ago) for years now and had 0 issues.
I also utilize Spybot on rare occasions (although I haven't had something harmful on my computer ever since I've been using NOD).

Get some antispyware too, either SAS or MBAM. Both are very good and very free, better than Adaware.

Windows Firewall is decent but 3rd party FW is better. Windows Defender is good and works with other AV/AS. Windows doesn't have an AV program yet, so download one of those. Avast and Avira are free too.

Oops, Superantispyware and MalwarebytesAntimalware. I've used Adaware myself, and I currently run SAS on Vista. SAS is much lighter and has done a better job at detection in my cases (on both Vista and XP machines)

AVG Anti-Virus, Windows Defender, Windows Firewall, IE7 and Firefox, surfing with cookies disabled/trusted-domains-only. Never had virus or malware. UAC enabled (hope this feature if GREATLY improved upon in Windows7)

for system maintenance I use Piriform CCleaner and Auslogics BoostSpeed

I was also using SAS and it worked well but I uninstalled it because everything that SAS found was also found by Avira, was trying for about 6 months and just didnt see the need for both of them. Chose Avira because it is a proper AV and SAS is just anti malware/spyware, etc.
Just wish Avira free checked email content like AVG did, I would be so happy then :p
