I am a college student and am plannig to record all of the class lectures, this semester. I know that voice recognition software has to be trained to work, so it might not be able to transcribe notes directly from the lecture, since it will not be trained to the professor's voice. What if I listened to the lecture and read it into a microphone, for the voice recognition software to transcribe? Do you think that it would work? Thank you for the replies.

Beyond the tech question, I doubt that the prof will let you sit in the back of the class muttering into a headset.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 have this built in... in Vista go to Control Panel > Ease of Access > Speech Recognition... I'm not sure what the path is in Win 7 but you can also open the Start menu and search for "speech".
It's not perfect but it's not bad either. A lot will depend on the clarity of your microphone... results with my laptop's built-in mic were poor, and my wireless mic was unusable... but a cheap $3 desktop microphone produced good results.
As for 3rd-party alternatives... well Dragon is the main one... I haven't used it though.
