Does anybody know of any software that will allow the main speakers volume to be changed up and down using the keyboard? (such as windows key and up and down arrows)

I tried HotKeyz but it didn't work

    Many thanks

I'm on Vista Home Premium with a Dell XPS M1530. Keyboard controls would be much better than using the funny multimedia touch button things.

edit: not sure if it's worth starting a new thread but I just switched from vista ultimate when I got the new laptop and now can't do complete system image backups. Is there equivalent software that create an entire system image backup that could be used to recover from if needed?

Many people use Acronis to create system images, although personally I have not tried it.

Have you tried Fn+PageUp/PageDown? That's the usual Dell setup... those keys adjust volume on my Vostro, even though they aren't marked, because I hae dedicated media buttons.

no luck :( I used to have a vostro and liked the media buttons on there as they are actually physical buttons that you can feel and control rather than these fancy "touch" feel button things. with the vostro buttons you could just tap them to change volume a little whereas with the xps when I'm full screened on a game it's so hard to just tweak the volume up or down a little as a tap on the button does nothing, you have to hold it down

You might try some of the utilities suggested in this link. I haven't messed with AutoHotkey myself, but a friend of mine has, and I think it would probably work.

    Cheers... :)

IDK about Vista, but in XP if you left click the little speaker thingy in the system tray, the volume slider that pops up can also be controlled with the mouse wheel.

I think the OP wants a way to adjust the volume while playing games (or using other full-screen software).

    yeah

this is so close to ideal, it provides the exact functionality I'm looking for if only it used the keyboard not the mouse as I often don't have a mouse on my notebook. so what I'm looking for must be possible just a case of if it exists out there :p

It can be set to use the keyboard instead of a mouse wheel. I am using it on my laptop. I have it set to use hot-keys not the mouse. I use hot-keys "control and arrow up" to increase volume and "control and arrow down" to decrease volume. You can set it to use what ever keys you want.

Open the interface and on the left hand side where it says use the "Wheel Mouse Rule" and "Use the mouse wheel when," select "use hot-keys instead of mouse wheel" from the drop down menu. It is at the bottom of the list. Then on the right side select "more." At the bottom of the window that pops up, you can set the hot-keys.
