What is normal CPU usage in idle state?

Mine is always around 10%. That makes temps always a bit higher and fan always running.

I remember when having XP on the same NB, idle CPU usage would be around 1%. This way the temps would go 49-55C, as 49C is fan off and 55 is on, speed level 1.

Win7 is probably doing more in the background then xp. But I do think 10% is kind of high for idling.

I only have a low power cpu , see sig and it idles at 1-2% so 10% is quite high , you must have background processes running.

Mine is around 4-7%, but I have a loaded Rainmeter + some other stuff on the background. If I do a clean load, disabling all the desktop bells and whistles, I get 0-2%

Ok, thanks everyone, I'll try it. I have some background processes but nothing I didn't have before in XP, MSE, Download Manager, Everest, SRS Audio and thats pretty much it.

I get between 1~2%, and then 4~9%, but I know what I have running and what causes it, I usually get lower percents if I have my processor run at full speed over higher ones if it decides to downclock itself.

Look at the undervolting guide: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824

You get a more accurate CPU/OS usage from RMClock. Probably your CPU and your GPU are connected to the same heatpipe/cooling fan. CPU fan should be on the moment you start up your laptop. Rememeber the GPU needs cooling also if it's on the same heatpipe, so the cooling fan needs to be ON at all times. When CPU temp hits 60 or more its normal for the fan to kick into high speed. Are you using any software to control the speed of the cooling fan? ... and CPU usage should be anywhere from 0 to 1% depending on what you're running at startup. Anyways undervolting will take a few degrees off your CPU just so the cooling fan is not noisy.

Yes they are on the same heatpipe but the fan scheme is not the same on all NBs. In my case, the fan stops when the CPU temp comes down to 49C. The fan kicks in higher speed only when the GPU temp is 80C, I tried it with ATITool.

AFAIK it is almost impossible to control the fan speed for majority of users, except Dell and few other lucky owners.

I'm not worried about the temps, which are normal IMO and the same since I bought the NB, the CPU usage is the thing that raises the temp.

It's the startup process list. Brush it up. In task manager its listed what program uses how much CPU, the process list not the graph.

You could temp. disable aero theme and see the results. Run in classic mode.

Resource monitor is much more helpful BTW. Startup's fine. Thanks anyway.

my systems had higher CPU usage for some reason in the first few days of use, (laptop and desktop) but after that my temps were lower than ever before.

i would say between 0-10% would be normal depending on what your running.
