Hey guys, I was wondering if it is possible to install W7 home premium upgrade from vista home premium with a W7 pro serial. I am saying because I already upgraded but have an extra serial through my school and plan on installing it for my gf. I couldnt see it being a problem using a higher valued serial with a lower valued software... but who knows with microsoft.

    Thanks

Why not just install Pro and then uninstall the components that are not needed and avoid the hassle?

That won't work, but why not just install W7 Pro?. You have two serials, it is legal and you won't notice anymore overhead with Pro over Premium.

See I would just install W7 Pro, but she currently has Vista HP on hers and it is not possible to upgrade it. I guess it wont work, ill probably just do a fresh install for her or something. Thanks anyway.

Alright sorry for the double post but new idea... I got a key from my MSDNAA site for W7 Pro and am thinking about upgrading my current W7 home premium version to free up the serial I am currently using... so basically, if I do the upgrade to pro, will the HP serial be free for me to upgrade my gf's comp? Thanks again.

I'm not following why you think you can't upgrade her Vista Home Premium on an HP? If you have a Windows 7 Pro Upgrade from MSDNAA with the W7 Pro product key you certainly can perform the upgrade. Its not the same as using an OEM upgrade disc from the manufacture where you have to upgrade from like versions of products.

Wouldn't surprise me if microsoft wouldn't let you use that serial for a lower copy

"HP" and "HP" are not the same in this guy's posts. Read carefully. At times, "HP" stands for a brand. At other time, "HP" stands for "Home Premium."

To answer your question: if you have two Windows 7 keys, you have freedom to perform two Windows 7 installs. Sort out which version you would like on which computer and go for it.

Yeah, I am not talking about the brand HP, but more HP representing Home Premium...

    Basically: (HP = Home Premium)
-I have W7 HP installed on my computer right now with an upgrade serial
-I have an extra serial for Windows 7 Pro that is not in use
-My girlfriend has Windows Vista HP installed
-I would like to upgrade my W7 HP to W7 Pro to free up the current W7 HP serial and replace it with the W7 Pro serial
-I would then have W7 Pro installed on my computer
-I would like to then use the "freed" W7 HP upgrade serial to upgrade my girlfriends Vista HP version.

I am just wondering if it is possible to free up the W7 HP serial by upgrading to W7 Pro, thus allowing me to install it to another computer.

Sorry for any confusion about the acronyms, but thanks.

I don't see anything wrong with that scenario and it is perfectly legal.

The only problem you might run into is activating "HP" on your girlfriends computer over the internet since you activated it on another computer previously.

You may have to activate it over the phone with MS but since what you are doing is legal, and you explain that you uninstalled then re-installed you will be fine. It shouldn't matter how many different computers you install it on as long as it is only installed and activated on one computer at any given time.

Alrighty well thats what I figured... thanks again... also, would any of you happen to know if the MSDNAA W7 serials ever expire? I hear that they dont, but you can only use them up to 10 different configurations.... anyone care to elaborate?
