I updated my dads notebook(x200) to w7 from Vista and now it asks for key! old key does not work! what can I do? I got w7 disk from Microsoft partner program.
-
It should still require a key unless otherwise specified. You'll need to call MS via the 800 number when you try to activate with your old key. Explain it to them and they should get you going.
-
Windows 7 does not use Vista keys. If you got it through the partner program, you should have been provided with a new key
-
That's exactly what I was thinking.
-
I got just a small package with 2 disks- one with 1xW7 ultimate and one with 10xW7 pro! neither got a key!
-
How are you associated with the partner program? How did you order the DVDs?
-
They'll put the product key on a sticker on the sleeves.
If not, you got duped!!!! -

If you got it from the partner program you need to also obtain the key from the partner program.

Package? From the partner program? I thought that they no longer issued physical media.
Gary -
Well, Microsoft official representation in this country is just above our office(in same building)and I got disks from them but they don't have official support team here...
-
I think it's time you paid them a visit, LOL.

That paints a whole different picture than "I got w7 disk from Microsoft partner program". Effectively, these are bootleg copies. You don't have a license to use 'em. Unless someone upstairs is willing to give you a license key, you are out of luck.
Gary -
what are you talking about? our company is official Microsoft partner! And what do you mean "willing"? we pay yearly fee for this stuff! I was asking just to check whether it is supposed to be like this or they just forgot to include key!

Then obtaining the key you need is a trivial task of going to MSDN and getting it from the subscriber downloads and product keys section.
Gary -
Maybe theor server mailed the key and you didn't check.
-
Or it's FAKEMICROSOFT.NET!!!!!
-
your COMPANY is in the partner program. Not you.
Are you your companies contact person for their membership in msft partner?
if not, then you have no business walking upstairs to get a set of install media from msft.
If yes, then you should already have access to the license key request/generation system and this thread is moot. -
well, thank you for your extremely helpful and nice post! No, I am not the contact person...however, my dad is the founder and CEO of the company and I think that it might be my business! I was just asking because it was Sunday and support was unavailable!
-
Reminds me of the old joke:
kid: "Don't you know who my father is?"
someone: "Why, doesn't your mom know?" -
Reminds me of Spalding, from Caddyshack.
-
If your Dad is the CEO, then it shouldn't be hard to get in contact with Microsoft.
-
That doesn't mean much. You can be CEO of a 50 person company, in which case Microsoft will still treat you like crap.
-
And?
We got the key yesterday! As I said, it was Sunday and support was unavailable! Thanks to all who really tried to help
W7 asks for key after updating!
