Which software do you use for tweaking and tuning W7. Back in WinXP I was using TuneUp, but W7 is not yet supported.
Any suggestions? Thanks
-
Win 7 is already tweaked a lot. No need to tweak it further.
-
Well what if i still want some tweaking, tuning and cleaning, all in one. Anyone using something like that.
-
For tweaking:
Ultimate Windows Tweaker 2.0 or EnhanceMySe7en
For cleaning:
CCleaner -
exactly what kind of tweaking and tuning do you want to do and why do you think it's necessary in win7?
kind of silly to go stomping around for a 'solution' before you define a problem. -
I guess nothing is perfect....
If I could only tweak FlashPlayer........ -
LOL.
Tweaking Windows 7, I love to do that.
Windows 7 is much faster than Windows Vista obviously.
However, I did do some tweaking on it too but not as much as Vista's.
I prefer to do it manually since I know what I am doing instead of giving a software to do it automatically. -
cheers ... -
I applied most of the Vista T&T guide http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=166532 and increased speed and lowered consumption by about 2 - 3 Watt
Should I apply most of the T&T Vista guide on W7 ?
Or does W7 already is a lot more powerfull and less consuming than Vista that not much can be gained ?
Does your battery run longer on W7 compared to Vista ? -
I use TuneUp Utilities 2009 to clean up Vista. It's a decent software for tweaking the OS. I don't know if 7 is fully supported though.
-
Thanks a lot guys, I'm on to tweaking now
.
@Wolf04 - TU09 doesn't support W7. -
IMO Win7 doesn't require much tweaking it is already very well optimize.
If you are interested I have written a script to automate disk cleaning weekly, that is about it.
It is in bat file so you are free to edit as you wish. -
and it will add itself to taskscheduler and runs itself once every week? -
It was originally for Vista because prefetching in Vista sucks so I added it in.
When Prefetch was enabled in Vista it took a long time to boot.
I forgot to remove it for Windows 7, Windows 7 handles the prefetching well enough.
Yep it adds itself to taskscheduler under a SYSTEM account so when it launches you won't see a command prompt Window
I will remove the prefetch entry for Windows 7.
You have to run the install.bat script to add it to task scheduler. -
Hey! Do you(weinter) know how to fix the "Folder In Use" bug for Windows 7?
I have been experiencing it like hell. It makes me can't change/replace/remove the files/folders sometime.
While I download .exe files to the desktop from Internet Browser, I will got his message. Screenshoot below. Some research or people said it is due to caching of thumbnails or something like thumb.db.Attached Files:

Can you show me the permission of the folder.
Right Click Properties.
Check the first tab for Read only checkboxes make sure they are clear
Check the User Permission tab make sure the account belongs to you as well
Also check the Account settings
Control Panel >> Admin Tools >> User Account
I hope when you reinstall you did destroy the original partition before creating a new NTFS partition to install Windows otherwise you will have permission issues because some folders would be associated with the previous account. -
i think ccleaner does the same as your script? and even more?
-
-
I did check the permission, owner and so on.
I did take all of them for myself only. Tried a lot of methods though.
Those folder are all READ ONLY.
User Account, I am the Administrator and I only allow 1 account to logon that is me(Administrator).
About the deletion of partition. Do you mean I need to delete the whole Hardisk and recreate them again?
Because when I reformat the laptop, I have 4 partitions.
1st partition is hidden partition of Acer stuffs.
4th partition is hidden too for XP booting(Acer Arcade Deluxe) MBR.
2nd partition is C drive basically for System OS.
3rd partition is D drive, storage.
So, when I install Windows 7, I only formatted the C drive and do the installation afterward. Is this the culprit behind all these problems? -
-
it will be a huge mistake if you try to treat win7 like you treat XP in terms of 'tweaking and tuning'.
Nothing you've posted so far indicates that you intend to do anything but delete a few annoying temp files.
In terms of storage management, it is always almost better to go with one disk=one partition. Too often we see people with free storage in the wrong partition. Partitions came in mostly to help people get around first a 32 Mb disk limit, then a 128 Gb disk limit. Since we now have modern filesystems, BIOS, disk drivers, virtual machines, etc, disk partitions are much more of a nusiance than anything else. -
After that, only use the free space(deleted C drive) to create a NTFS C partition again. Then, install the OS? -
Yes you mean you didn't?
If you use quick format and didn't delete C there could be remainders left behind. -
quick format clears the file/cluster allocation tables. 'good enough' for nearly anything you can think of.

Anyone know where I can find some good tweaks I can do to increase performance? Whether it be regular ones in the control panel or even registry tweaks. Thanks
-
I wouldn't bother with "tweaks." In most cases, you can inflict more harm to your pc than help.
Windows Vista and Windows 7 have fantastic maintenance features that are automated. -
image os and in the event of disaster (non starting or virus/malware) just restore os partition with boot disk knowing that your own files are safe (i use acronis true image but there are others)
my 2c -
it seems like i can apply all the tweaks for vista on the vista thread to windows 7. why would i keep indexing on, or not remove features that i wont use?
-
Turning off indexing is a debatable 'tweak', depending on how often you search your drive for files. Turning off/uninstalling unneeded features is always a good pratice, and so is streamlining the startup processes/msconfig.
