they might (should) give a good amount of discount to the
current vista owners. but that's all.

Vista will get some of the internal improvements in the form of Vista SP2... but you'll have to buy an upgrade to Windows 7 to get the new user interface features.

In terms of GUI, Windows 7 is an update to Vista.

Yeah, it really depends entirely on what you mean by "update".

Vista -> 7 will be a smaller change than XP -> Vista... but it will cost money.

And despite what some people say, it doesn't really compare to a service pack -- at least not any MS has ever released -- because service packs are for changes to internals, not UI changes... and 7 is largely about UI changes.

As microsoft has ruined many a lives with Vista,so they should compensate for that after giving Windows 7 as an update....

I can imagine how heated the debate must be at Microsoft...

Should we charge for upgrades to Windows 7 and make billions...

...or should we give it away for free and feel really special...
    and unemployed....

All I know is that my Vista is running OK, as is my Ubuntu.

    Windows 7 = $$$, Ubuntu = $0

You have the same odds as Apple not charging $130 for Snow Leopard which even they said has no "new features". Windows 7 is more than a service pack, by that logic every single edition of windows should be free because it's just an improvement over the previous one. Microsoft doesn't owe you anything.
