    7-Zip is the best free alternative.

    Although I am used to WinRAR.... version 3.62 is even multi-threaded. :)

    Last I tested (posted a big thread about hit here), 7Zip was quite a bit faster, and compressed better.

    Also doesn't have WinRar's nag screen. :D
