I've just bought a HP Dv5 "entertainment notebook" and wmp11 doesn't seem to play avi's at all. No video and no audio. The same files play on my desktop no problems. I'm running vista home premium on both computers. Out of frustration I have restored it back to factory setting and reinstalled the codecs (xvid divx and k-lite full)again and it is still not working. VLC player doesn't play my avi's either.
Help me please

Try installing Media Player Classic, if it still doesn't work I expect something is wrong with your .avi files, not the media players or codecs :/.
Did the files get transferred properly to your laptop? -
The files were transfered the files via a usb flash drive. -
Here's a direct download link, I didn't have it on my new laptop yet so I just downloaded it myself: http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=4253&s=134
If it still doesn't work, try to copy your files to the USB from your desktop and back to your laptop again. If it still doesn't work... then someone else will have to try to help you.

Try installing some codecs.
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/XP_Codec_Pack.htm
I believe that one comes with Media Player Classic too. -
Just be careful with installing too many codecs, they can start conflicting with each other. It's usually best to stick to one pack, or as few codecs as possible to play what movies you want to play.
-
DivX has always worked well for me; I would recommend it.
-
Is their a way to delete the codecs ive installed and start again?
-
-
Is there a correct sequence to install the codecs in, or any order is ok?
-
I must say...WMP is weak...compared to other media players. You want a real media player get VLC media player. Not the best looking, but it gets the job done all the time...that's what I recommend.
...well, then something is definitely wrong w/ that computer. 'Cause VLC plays everything......

VLC player runs when I open an avi but there is no video or audio.
The scroll bar skips quickly across the top if that makes sense. -
The file didn't download/copy/transfer ; w/e u did properly! In that case, most likely the file may be corrupt.
-
To me it sounds like your .avi files are corrupted, try copying them with the USB memory again, or in some other way.
There's no correct sequence to install codecs, but if you have installed one codec pack, don't install another one.
VLC is a great player, but it has failed me at a few occasions, something Media Player Classic didn't do yet, I find it a generally better overall player. -
Yep, the files ended up being corrupted. I guess thats what you get when you use cheap memory sticks from hong kong.
Thanks to everyone for your help!!! -
It looks like you have your issue solved already, but what I find to work best is Media Player Classic and I also use the K-Lite Codec pack. The CCCP Project also is another pack to try, I haven't used it though.
-
BUT .. VLC has a very poor playback quality & when i play high bitrate music..its clips.
and there are Distortions also. -
Happy you got your problems solved! It was as I guessed
.
As for what codec pack to go with, I'd chose CCCP, since k-lite stopped updating quite some time ago, unless some other group picked up that project. -

I am kind of a codec noob so I just use the megapack to make sure I cover all my bases. -
For those reading this in the future, i just did this on my g/f's vaio:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multim...deo-Codecs/Advanced-Vista-Codec-Package.shtml
That is what you need -
... becasue I really like to use only one player on my computer, and Windows Media Player works decent for me (but doesn't play many formats though)
