WMP 11 is the standard for Vista and available for XP too - for at least 2 years if I'm not mistaken.
Edit: Missed out the 11 above....

Windows Media Player 12 is only available for Windows 7. You must download the pre-beta version of Windows 7 (Build 6801) or wait for the official beta.

Haha, that's what I get for being so loyal to Foobar2000 for so long...

Speaking of which, why would anyone even bother with WMP anyway?

Foobar2000 + Media Player Classic = No need to launch WMP ever again.

I prefer WMP over Foobar2000 because:
    - A lot of Foobar functionality requires plugins, which I've found to be difficult to install, and different plugins require different versions of foobar... the whole thing is just a nightmare IMO.
    - WMP has good functionality (and looks) out of the box
    - WMP lets me view my library and playlist side-by-side, and drag tracks from my library to the playlist. I don't think Foobar can do this out of the box, although I'm sure there are plugins.
    - I like the various view options in WMP (album view, etc.). I'm sure I could get something similar in Foobar if I wanted to spend a few more days trying to install plugins.
    - Foobar seemed to like to completely overwrite my whole library database with a few tracks I wanted to listen to. Then I would have to rebuild the database... I'm sure I was doing something wrong, but whatever.
    - WMP supports MTP device sync in addition to UMS.

Mostly I just find WMP's usability much better. But... Foobar is a good program too and I don't like to knock it... I'm glad people have a lot of choices.

2 of the reasons I use WMP are for the playlists used in Media center, and to sync with my Windows Mobile phone. That might be doable in other programs, but its a lot of work and I have yet to hear a single reason I should dislike WMP.

I like the interface of the music library in WMP11. As for video, .Vista Codec Pack does an awesome job although I use VLC to keep the aspect ratio and for streaming.

To stay on track, WMP 12 is not out. Based on the good old trusty Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Media_Player), it will be released with Windows 7.

wmp12 has sharing capability. Basically you can share music thru ur network. I believe you can do it on wmp11 but its much easier on 12.

if i only knew how to grab wmp12 from 7 beta and transfer it to vista.

They release WMP11 as a download for XP... so I'm hoping they'll release WMP12 (when it's finished) as a download for Vista. I'm guessing they probably will, since competing software (iTunes) will continue to release free updates for existing versions of Windows.

You can already share all your medias in WMP11 on the network with uPnP. There's some settings in WMP and Vista for media sharing.

Point is, do you want to? I don't.
    (regarding sharing media)

The advantage of Windows Media Player over all other players is that its very light.

Still -for most of my CDs Sonic Stage is my player of choice (also due to my Sony Walkman)

It's mainly the network sharing design on Windows 7 that is way superior to before from what I've seen. (although I haven't tested it since I only have 1 computer with 7 installed on)

Does the improved networking cover other areas of networking other than just media sharing?
