I don't know. Probably not, I'm guessing MS wants to move everyone off XP and onto Windows 7 now.

win7 is quite interconnected with media sharing, libraries and such. backporting would be quite some extra work, which they most likely won't do for an outdated os that has no real support anymore.

There was an early report here that Windows Media Player 12 wasn't even coming to Vista...

I don't know why you'd even want it. It kinda sucks. I mean for once, they removed the Tag Editor and now the album art is set to a measly resolution.

I think people would be interested in the built-in codecs (DivX/XviD/H.264/AAC/AC-3) more than anything.

Kind of useless. I still use MPC here for videos though I have to play my 720p .mp4 files with WMP because there's no video showing up in MPC (with Community Codec Pack).

Meh, I still have to use MPC for HD videos too. 1080p movie trailers stutter like hell on WMP on my i5. No problem under MPC

Yes, you can, but it requires a bit of hacking

The tag editor is still there. The album art size is adjustable and you can use higher resolution album art if you want too.

But now I have to use Windows Explorer to change song information and I still don't have very much control over the album art. And this what I was talking about the album art:

WMP resizes it all to 200x200. Either way, WMP 12 is a huge step backwards from the previous WMP.

I used WMP12 once and only once. It was on my friend's computer. It sucked so much that I just looked up the song I wanted to listen to on YouTube and listened to it on there.

a WMP12 for WinXP surely is not going to happen since XP is way passed "mainstream" support lately. WMP12 is only for Win7.

I read somewhere that there is a skin of WMP 12 that works for XP. I would not nock XP just yet only about 27% of all computers on this rock use something different than XP. There are still many business class computers available with it that are being sold.

Windows XP development sometime ago. All XP has is "support" for critical problems up to 2012.

Windows Media player 12 can't be ported to XP as is, there is A LOT of work that needs to be done. The video engine in Vista/Win7 is significantly different between the 2. Yes Windows Media player 11 was ported to XP, but they are essentially 2 completely different world in term of performance, and responsiveness, just like if they were 2 different software but with the same name.

Windows Media Player 12 presents features that benefit selling Windows 7, such as connection to libraries, network streaming, internet sharing, fast startup. So obviously, Microsoft will not even make it for Vista.

It is true to Microsoft wants to kill XP, and this is really a first where Microsoft REALLY wants XP to die. XP dates since 2001, new (2006 and newer) has serious performance issue with it, critical security issues (it's based on NT3.. before the whole internet thing, and when Microsoft was much smaller where security was not their priority.. what do you expect?!)

XP has so much security wholes mixed with the lack of effort form anyone to update their Windows XP with the latest patches, leads to have a lot of worms affecting many systems and present other issues like virus spreading.

Microsoft wanted to kill XP in 2003 with Longhorn (Vista), I mean Microsoft said them self, that the idea of Longhorn project is to restart from scratch. Still keeping the general architecture (registers, kernel design, etc..), but have security first, and make it designed for modern system pulling the plug on many old standards for performance and be more responsive.
So now you know how much Microsoft wants to pull the plug. I will not be surprised if they have a counter to 2010 at the exact day where they will pull the plug on it.
