I have purchased a DVD full of music of ebay. All the files seem to have the extension ".wmp.mp3". I do not have any mp3 player software on my pc so they automatically play in Windows media player 10. However, i am not convinced they are mp3 files because they all have different sample rates (some upto 500kbs) whereas i thought mp3s had predermined rates 128,192 etc. Also, the file sizes vary considerably (e.g i am used to approx 1MB/min at 128kb, but some of these files are double that size)
The files play ok in my standalone dvd player, but i haven't tried my mp3 player yet.

Do you think they are mp3 files or has someone (or some software) just stuck .mp3 on the end so they will be recognised as mp3 files.

Do i need to convert them to mp3 and is they a quick way to do it. (I only have experience of windows media player upto about version 7)

    Thanks

well...i think the format of the mp3 is VBR...which means that they are mp3 songs...but with diff. sample rates...and by convert..do u mean to put on a CD-R and play in a normal cd player or something??...i know u can use nero burning rom for that...or also musicmatch jukebox

    Thanks

I didn't know you could get mp3 in Variable Bit Rate. Do most rippers convert mp3 in VBR these days if you want - i thought you were stuck with the 128,192 rates etc.

Perhaps they have already been converted - i don't know.

My mp3 collection is on a 20GB hard drive on my win98 machine, which is not networked and cannot the read the DVD+R that has the 4GB of ".wmp.mp3" files on. I want to transfer the files to my win98 machine and will probably have to do it via CD-RW. I was concerned about all the effort needed to do this and then find that they were not true mp3s that could be read by my mp3 software (came with my Creative muvo mp3 player) on my win98 machine.

I suppose i'll give it a go. If they are true mp3 files i'll remove the.wmp part of the extension.

    Thanks
