Hello all!
I used to be able to play AVI files without any problems, and this is what my digital camera saves video files as, but I've gone to play one today and WMP shows the first frame and nothing happens, then if you press stop and play I get the following error: "The enumerator has become invalid." It does this for every AVI created by my camera and downloaded AVI files, yet used to play them fine. I've tried reinstalling WMP10 but it has made no difference.![]()
Please can you help?

Digital camera make and model?
-
It's a Casio Exilim EX-Z850. All its AVIs have played fine since I got it in September 2006 until I tried today. The only thing that's different now is I installed the Xvid plugin on my notebook about a month ago via WMPlugin.com, yet some other AVIs play fine.

Install GSpot on the computer you're trying to play the videos on.
Run one of your Casio digital camera video files through it.
GSpot will tell you what you're missing. -
I'll give it a go but why would I be missing anything at all when I haven't removed anything?

Audio: DVI ADPCM
Video: M4S2
I've tried installing a codecs pack from Microsoft's web site and it made no difference. -
OK. That's MPEG4 Ver. 2. What I'd do is first try the latest DIVX codec from http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/codec/ . I think that Xvid plugin probably screwed up your MPEG4 decoding.
-
I've used Xvid's uninstaller but GSpot still reports the XVID codec is installed when I use a relevant AVI. How can I search for all Xvid codecs and remove them?
-
I installed the DivX codec and the problem still remains, except now the AVI that plays using the Xvid codec now says "DivX Video" in the bottom right hand corner and fades out.

1) See if you have xvid.ax in your C:\Windows\System32 directory.
2) If so, in the Start > Run... box type in regsvr32 -u xvid.ax and click OK. This will unregister the Xvid codec in your system.
3) Delete all instances of the xvid.ax file in your C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\System32\dllcache directories. -
2) LoadLibrary failed, obviously.
3) I can't see a dllcache folder in system32. -
I've just found this:
http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=648436
It doesn't look good and the annoying thing is not knowing what caused it in the first place.
I really don't want to do a fresh install to fix this if I can avoid it. -
Well, if you want to, do a System Restore to before you installed the Xvid plugin. Don't know what else to tell you.
Have you done a reboot since uninstalling the Xvid plugin and installing the Divx package? -
I've already looked through my restore points and can't find the Xvid installation, which is strange.
Interesting, if I use the Proposed Codec Solutions and Tests section of GSpot I can get the problem AVIs to play in GSpot with both the GSpot and MS rendering and solutions options despite the reports of "Failed to connect....." and "Failed to create....."
How do I translate this working method to Windows, as far as I can see I have all the DLL and AX files GSpot is referring to? -
Do you have anothe media player installed, like Nero, you can try the files in?
-
I've got Nero Express 6.
-
Try VLC.
... -
I tried opening one of the AVIs in Quicktime and it plays the sound but no video (not sure what plugin/codec QT needs for AVI files).
-
AVI is only a container. It doesn't signify any one codec.
-
I got it to play a couple of files by opening a problem AVI in WMP and selecting the progress bar with the mouse then using the right cursor key to go to the end and the left cursor key to back, then it started playing but without any audio. I'm having difficulties replicating this now though.
I need to get some sleep and will continue with this tomorrow.
Thanks for all your help so far WackyT. -
I did a system restore to way back before Xvid was anywhere near my notebook and used GSpot to confirm the Xvid codec was no longer installed, then I tried one of the problem AVIs and it worked. Strangely though Xvid was showing in the Start menu and in Program Files so I removed these and tried playing an Xvid AVI and got no picture or sound, there was no sound because the AC3Filter was missing so I installed this again and tried the Xvid AVI and as expected got sound but no picture. I then tried the problem AVI that played a few minutes ago and the same "enumeration" error so I uninstalled the AC3Filter and now the AVI plays again.
After going through all the hassle of a system restore and fixing the things it breaks I could have just uninstalled the AC3Filter but never even thought this was causing the problem.
After uninstalling the AC3Filter I don't get any sound from the Xvid AVI but GSpot reports AC3 codec installed. How could this be?
How do I play AVIs that need the Xvid and Dolby AC3 codecs while still being able to play the AVIs my camera creates? -
If I set AC3Filter's Filter merit to Prefer AC3Filter I get audio for the Xvid codec but the camera AVIs give the enumeration error and if I set the Filter merit to Prefer other decoder I can play the camera AVIs (video and audio) but no longer get sound from the Xvid codec.
Any ideas how I can get everything playing in harmony or will I just have to keep changing this AC3Filter setting each time I want to watch different AVIs?
(Now I have to try to fix Adobe Reader 7 which the system restore has broke. I can't uninstall it or reinstall the old version to fix the uninstall error.)
Edit: I may have sorted the AVI problem. If I set AC3Filter's Filter merit to Prefer AC3Filter and the Default audio renderer to Wave Out instead of Direct Sound, both types of AVI play fine. Just Adobe Reader 7 to go. -
I've now sorted the AVI and Adobe Acrobat problem but one remains. I can no longer get to a couple of web sites I frequent, I can successfully ping them but they will not display:
They don't work in IE7 or FF2. I wonder if the server is down for maintenance? -
Glad to hear you got it all sorted out.
Both websites you posted don't come up for me either. -
Thanks for trying those links too, it puts my mind at rest that my notebook's back to functioning how it should be.
Do you reckon I should leave Xvid off my machine now, being as DivX is playing my Xvid AVIs, and only install it when/if I need to? -
I'd say stick with the Divx as long as it's working OK. Both Divx and Xvid are MPEG4 formats.
