Lets take Word 2007 for example. Open your document in Word 2007 and click on the button (the round MS office symbol) on the top left. A menu should come down, with an option to "Save As". Clicking on that should open a sub-menu with 5 options - the third one will be "Word 97-2003 Document". You should click on that and now your document is saved in something that can be opened in Office 2003.

Alternatively, although I haven't personally tried it, you can just try to open the document in Word 2003, and then when it says it can't open it, it should give you the option to look for a plug-in so that it can. If it doesn't ask you and just refuses to open, I am sure you could search on Google with the search terms "docx office 2003 plugin" or something along those lines. Hope this helps.

Yea Office 2007 uses a different format. I would expect MS to release a patch or something so older version of Office will be able to open 2007 documents and stuff soon.

I thought you could run office 2007 in compatibility mode - that is to say it automatically saves to office 2003 format.

Well, there's really a couple of issues with running a hybrid environment -- though the new file format is the major one. Also, though, the default fonts have been replaced with Cambria and Calibri, and a total of 10 new fonts are installed by Vista or Office 2007.

To fix the first problem, you have a choice. If you have a lot of Office 2000/XP/2003 machines, then you'll probably want to go into the options of your Office 2007 applications and change the default save format to the old style format. This can be done for each application, and will save you from haveing to remember to "save as..." when you want to use the file on another system. If you don't have that many machines running older versions of Office, you can install the Office Update that Robbirzell linked to on each machine runnning Office 2003/XP/2000 that allows them to open and save the new format.

The font issue is also a problem, but one less easy to solve. You could install the new fonts from your Office 2007 disc (can't remember where they are though) on each old machine, or you could change the fonts you use in the new 2007 apps. Or don't bother with either, but be aware that the font will be changed when you migrate a file from the 2007 app to an older version.

    Hope that helps somebody.

Microsoft released a Compatibility Pack for Office XP and Office 2003 that addresses the problem for Word, Excel and PowerPoint in November 2006.
