Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but my wife just got an HP Pavilion dm3 with windows 7 installed--a lovely little computer, and she's enjoying it overall. But it has one major hiccup: the Magnifier, as part of Ease of Access, keeps showing up unasked for, especially after the computer has been in sleep mode. It seems to either eventually go away or when I go to the Ease of Access window (WIN+U) and click on Magnifier twice, but we'd much rather that she didn't have to do that anytime.

Is this a known problem? I couldn't find anything much through Google. Any way to just shut the damn Magnifier off? She'll never need, afaik.

    Thanks!

Try go back to the Ease of Access Centre, click on the Maginifier to start, then click on "Make the computer easy to use" option below, there you should see the option to turn the Magnifier off!

    cheers ...

I tried that before and it is already off.

The weird thing is that it is a smaller Magnifier than when I turn it on with Ease of Access, and it "sticks" to everything, dragging and/or making stuff smaller or larger. I'm hoping it isn't a larger problem than some little kink that can be ironed out. It is strange how it comes and goes on its own accord...

Evidently no one knows the answer to this question, but can someone point me in the direction of someone that might? Is there a good forum for tech support of Windows 7 that someone knows about?

This is getting very frustrating, but I don't want to have to return the whole damn computer just because of this one minor problem...but it is a problem large enough to make using it a hassle, and a hassle that a new computer shouldn't have.

    hmm Try this

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/38827-magnifier-starts-startup-enable-disable.html#post380212

    or

    Remove from Registry

    # Step 1

Click Start and "Run..." Type in "regedit". The following procedure will edit the Windows registry, a database of Windows settings, to remove magnifier from its copy of the startup queue. See the warning below before proceeding.

    # Step 2

    Open the "HKEY_LOCAL _MACHINE" folder.

    # Step 3

Open the "SOFTWARE" folders, and then within that, "Microsoft" and "Windows".

    # Step 4

Click on the "Run" folder, and look at the list of values, called keys, on the right side of the screen. You are looking for a key that mentions the file "magnify.exe".

    # Step 5

Delete "magnify.exe" by right clicking on it and clicking delete. Do not delete or change anything else, especially if you are unsure about the purpose it serves. Close the registry editor and reboot your computer.

    Remove the Magnifier Itself

    # Step 1

Open My computer. Should both of the above steps fail, and you are certain you will no longer need the magnifier, you can remove the magnifier program itself. You will need to be logged in as a user with administrative privileges.

    # Step 2

Browse to the following location (this assumes Windows is installed on the C drive, as is default): C:\Windows\System32\.

    # Step 3

Find the magnify.exe file. Rename the file "magnifyHIDE.exe". Make no other changes to the System32 folder. Like the registry, this folder contains files important to the functioning of the Windows operating system. Mistakes can create bugs or even make Windows unable to start up.

Thanks for the reply. The first one I already tried and it isn't techically on. I tried to edit the registry, but couldn't find "magnifier.exe" under Run, nor after I tried using "Find."

After a bit more googling, I found that this is a common problem with the dm3 after it is in Sleep mode. After a bit of experimentation, it doesn't seem to do it after being Shutdown, just after Sleep. It also seems to work itself after about a minute--which doesn't stop it from being very annoying.

I'm thinking this isn't a Windows problem but an HP problem.
