I have a VGN-FE870E and want to switch from VISTA, which came on it, back to XP. I can't deal with Vista anymore and have XP with a registration key.

Anyway, this laptop didn't come with an OS CD like all my others always did. In case something goes wrong with my XP install....what is the procedure if it doesnt work out and I want to reinstall VISTA clean? I don't have discs?

The next question is, what do I have to worry about as far as going back to XP? Are there things on the laptop that may not work out so well (i.e. camera, certain features) or any drivers that I may have issues with?

Thanks for any help. I want to do this sometime this week.

If they havent given you any disc then the restore material should be on your hard drive itself. While you switch on your notebook press the F10 button and you should be able to restore your notebook.

As for the drivers etc for your laptop you should be able to find it here www.sony.com/business/drivers

yeah installing XP to the vista partition should not affect the backup partition (I think).

My thought was to format the hard drive and install XP Clean since VISTA just takes up SOO much space. Wouldn't that kill the restore files pon the hard drive in case I had to go back to OEM?

An external or Internal. I think there is a drive bay on my docking station. But then again, I have a desktop on my network running XP Pro without any issues.

i m sure that u'd have no issue running XP at all. My suggestion dwelled on the fact that u r about to install XP on a delivered Vista comp, and issues (and time invested) do arise with finding correct XP drivers for the machine in question.

    cheers ...

You should have an option to create recovery media. My HP laptop came with DVD's, but the Lenovo's did not so I just used the built in app to create them.

Or you might be able to call Sony and request the install disk.
