    Dear All,

I am looking for a software (OS - Windows Vista) that is able to convert guitar tabs written in notepad or word, into music notation. I'm looking for something like Tab Converter- 8notes.com .

I've also seen Sibelius or Finale... but I'm not sure if they do what I'm looking for - this is for a friend of mine who is not a music pro and doesn't know to write sheet music or whatever, but is an excellent guitar player, and he is looking for something to help him convert the guitar tabs into notations.

Also, is there any software that can take a guitar input and automatically convert the sounds into music notation?

    Thanks in advance. Cheers...

I'm going to save you alot of time and money...The short answer is no way! Sorry!
The long answer is audio to midi conversions via Midi interface-a good write up about the flaws here link
The best answer is to study music at college...being a excellent guitarist has nothing to do with the education needed to notate.

There are guitar transcribers out there that use their ears to put the notes to tab ( & Vice Versa) with their hand..they range from V skilled to cowboy standards.
Therefore Tab is very subjective as it's transcribed by different ears. But, perhaps give a song to transcriber and ask the costs.
Hollywood composers hire transcribers as its a lot of awful sweaty work getting the music together for the orchestra to play as was intended.

Best way will take the longest- to learn traditional notation and input it in with sibelius or guitar pro etc. Good for publishing or hearing a rough version of your song...but who wants to hear a computer emulating a guitar..when you can play it yourslef. Anyway the education is worth it!! ;)

here this will get him started link and this
If you hear about ppl using software to transcribe, it's probably a program which slows down the song so you can pick out the notes clearly in fast passages.
    Good luck!!

Love anyway to prove me wrong, pls do it!...i'll be the first to jump on a plane to buy the software :D

Guitar Pro can surely change notepad into music notation.
I have been importing and exporting into notepads so its surely possible.

    Thanks a lot people :)

I'm checking out Guitar Pro 6 right now... also, I've been looking at MuseScore to see if it will fit into the needs...

PS., @ t61jaws - my friend is a bit *too* old for college... ;) let' just leave it at that :)

Anyways, those two look kind of promising and I'm checking the details right now... let's see.

    Thanks again and cheers :)

We tried both guitar pro 6 as well as MuseScore and my friend picked out MuseScore :)

And I must accept it's kinda awesome, and stands by its claim to being a wonderful free alternative to professional program' such as Sibelius and Finale!!!

Also, it's a nice way to learn notations because you basically write and listen, there by learning what the notation' are about as well getting the composition going...

The interface is extremely user friendly and easy to learn / use. Note entry is very easy - the manuals and documentation are excellent and are available in many languages.

And it's not just a simple note entry but a complete composition... it's great, IMHO.

Anyway :) Thanks again and I thought I'll just drop by here to let you all know.

    Cheers
