Hi all,
Having hidden that well-know (notorious) POS KB3035583 on at least half-a-dozen previous occasions, the little turd has again floated to the surface; for those who don't know, this insidious piece of software is responsible for the 'Get Windows 10' rubbish that will nag you into submission until you succumb and become one of the Windows 10 Pod People ( Invasion of the Bodysnatchers anyone? )
So don't install it if you are happy with Win 7 or 8.1, and what ever you do, don't fall asleep EVER or you'll be replaced by a giant vegetable in the shape of Donald Sutherland......

Personally, I find all the BS around avoiding Win 10 to just be utterly stupid. people ***** about Windows 10 "invading privacy" but they have no problems using Siri or Google Now on their phones.
If its a Software compatibility thing, or just a personal preference, I get it, but any other reason is just fear mongering at this point.hmscott, SL2 and alexhawker like this. -
Best solution I have found is to turn off automatic Windows updates and install Destroy Windows Spying. I don't have to worry about any Micro$haft crap sneaking in. I keep the Windows 10 nagware and other Windows Update crap off of my Windows 7 and 8.1 installations, I don't have to fart around with or fix anything. Even my disposable sacrificial Windows 10 trash test installations have been update-free for more than six months. Nothing gets installed unless I say so and do it manually on purpose.
-
I bought and paid for Windows 7 64 Bit Ultimate, I'm more than happy with it and have no intention of ever allowing Win10 to be installed on my system - I've tried it, didn't like it and have no intention of being bludgeoned into accepting it, however much Microsoft attempt to insinuate it onto my system.
As a customer, I don't expect any supplier to force me to accept a product I have rejected, and by constantly reissuing this garbage that is what they are attempting to do.
Let me ask you this; if you were the proud owner of a 1955 Chevrolet Bel-Air, would you find it acceptable if Chevrolet sneaked up your driveway and replaced your Bel-Air with a 2016 Sonic, on the premise that it's more modern, fuel-efficient and safer??????
I think not.
And that's my stance; I made a studied decision to buy Win 7, and paid money for the legitimate licence to run THE VERSION OF MY CHOICE and I don't care if Win10 is free, marvellous, and smells of freshly washed xxxx, I simply do not want it and am starting to get mighty resentful of an organisation that just will not accept my decision; and repeatedly re-releasing this patch ( and others) it's quite clear that they don't accept that decision.
Hence the use of DWS, and GWX control panel, by more than an elevator-full of recalcitrant customers who simply want to use the OS of their choice and be left in peace......... -

Its listed as a recommended update
Just check off "Give me recommended updates the same way i receive important updates" Problem solved -
There is one simple solution: Install Windows 8/7 Enterprise. This version can't do an update to Win10 and thus there are no popups

Windows 10 will not be installed ever again on anything I own. Not unless they change quite a few things. Like, maybe the whole look and feel of it?? Modern apps are great on a phone or tablet, but absolutely suck on a PC. Something as simple as the great little calculator app on windows 7/8 was trashed for a modern app, hence pressing the calculator button on your keyboard brings up the windows 10 calculator window inactive.Which makes you click on the window to make it active so you can use your number pad to type. It is a complete abortion of a failed OS, and microsoft trying to push this crap on me with installed adware, is even more unacceptable. They may feel free to stick that POS up their collective arses.

I bet they extend the free upgrade For another six monthes or a year. To be honest I don't think they will ever stop trying to shove it down everyone's throat until every last pc on the planet is on windows 10.

I have a calculator button next to the num pad on my workstation notebook keyboard. I never realized how much I would use it until I had one (kind of like the middle mouse button on the touch pad); now I miss it when I'm at my work desktop.
I do have the calculator app pinned to the task bar on that PC, which is almost as easy/quick, but I definitely find the dedicated button useful when putting together quotes and cost estimates.

Does Win 10 even have a desktop calc or is it the "windows store" type calculator?

That's the problem. Every time I see that WinX is lacking something or something doesn't work as intended there is always a "hack" or "workaround" and in many cases, there is no way around it. So many things have to be tweaked, tuned, third party add-ons, etc that it's not the same OS out of the box. You have to tweak just to get it to work with the simplest of things like desktop calculator that has been the same since XP I believe.

While I felt the 'Photos' app was a pointless change to the retro 'photo viewer' app, what exactly is wrong with the 'modern' calculator app? You enter in numbers, conditions and it returns the result. There are issues with Windows 10 but this doesn't seem to be a legitimate concern IMHO.

Mr. Fox said: ↑Windows apps are crap. The calculator looks and feels like a piece of trash... hideously ugly bloatware. The first time I launched the calculator was instantly pissed off and started looking for a Windows calculator replacement. I did not even try to use it. I reached for the calculator on my desk after vomiting in my mouth a little. That describes a lot of Windows 10. Windows 8 was bad enough... but--never thought I would say it--awesome in comparison.Click to expand...
Agreed in general about the Windows Apps -but the calculator is one where I don't mind too much. -
bennni said: ↑Ok, so you just don't like the way it looks. IMHO so long as it gives the right total and opens quickly (Both of which it does) then I don't mind whether it is a modern app or not.

I could use a calculator like the one below. I'm sure it does math correctly as well, but it doesn't mean that I'm going to be pleased with it. In terms of aesthetically quality, it's a lot like a Windows 10 calculator. It also hogs up a lot of space on a desktop that it doesn't need to. But, in spite of its icky color it is "plush" and I'm sure somebody, somewhere, thinks it is really cute.

Like I said in my previous post, if you use a calculator button on your keyboard, it DOES NOT open as an active window. So you must use your mouse to click inside the program to make it active.
You cannot push the calculator button, and immediately start typing on your keypad, because it in not the active app when opening it. Something as simple as that makes it trash -
I read your post and understood your grievance - I asked Mr Fox because I wondered what his objection to it was, since he did not mention the same issue that you have experienced.
Pressing the Windows key and 's' brings up the search and from there, typing 'c' allows me to press the enter key and launch the calculator app directly (I use it quite a lot by searching so it's not surprising that it comes first in the result)... It's not ideal and it would be better if the keyboard key functioned with less difficulty but it's a possible solution. You can make a Control+Alt combo with another key to make a direct shortcut but might be unsuitable. -

No, I haven't read *all* of 'the bad stuff'. Having time constraints, I am unable to read *everything* but I believe I have a fairly good idea as to most of the salient grievances. I felt it was a worthwhile discussion and at any rate, It seemed better than generating yet more posts about Windows 10 being terrible as a whole.

More specifically about MS forcing Windows 10 Upgrades through persistence of trickery and evasions on unsuspecting Windows 7/8/8.1 owners by reissuing these KB's to do the Windows 10 Upgrade, each time undoing the Hidden KB the owner did to stop the Upgrade.
The new version of KB isn't recognized as a previous version of the same KB so the Hide done before is undone, and depending on how the user has their Windows Updates set, the KB might get reinstalled, and 4GB of Windows 10 Upgrade downloaded onto the users computer.
There are many other threads about the other specifics on why Windows 10 is terrible as a whole.
I would suggest taking the time to educate yourself about the problems people are having with Windows 10, Windows 10 Store, Windows 10 Upgrades, Windows 10 Privacy and Telemetry offenses, and take that project on first before speaking up about something you know not enough about, yet.
You seem intelligent, maybe not curious or persistent enough in digging up needed facts about Windows 10, and are therefore simply missing the data necessary to make an informed decision.
Be sure and come back after you've had the time to invest in following through on informing yourself, when it dawns on you that all of the people saying these terrible things about Windows 10 have valid concerns.Last edited: Mar 6, 2016Raiderman, toughasnails and HTWingNut like this. -

killkenny1, you don't want10? Check out two ways of stopping the madness - GWX Control Panel, and DWS Lite, I use both and regularly to ensure that nothing has slipped under the fence.
GWX Control Panel allows you to manage W10 nagware etc etc and DWS strips out some telemetry (spying!) updates in Win7 and 8.1hmscott likes this.
