I have no idea but it would be funny if you could
-
do a google search like bandwidth limiter or something
-
You need a router with QoS. They tend to be more expensive than normal routers.

stealthsniper96 What Was I Thinkin'?
make him pay for his own connection? mess around with the settings of the router theres gotta be sumthin you can do
-
lol, i have been searching for the same thing, any other ideas?

you can limit bandwidth by blocking the ports that he is using to download his stuff.
when you run a program to access the internet from a router, it uses a virtual port on the router to access the internet. if you block the port he is using for his incoming and outgoing connections, technically you should be able to limit his bandwidth.
the same way, you could unlock the port you use for your games, thereby increasing your bandwith in the process.
you should google port forwarding for your router -

Tell him his bandwidth usage disrupts your connection and ask if he would install netlimiter. Netlimiter lets you cap the bandwidth applications use. This way you can both get your fair share, it worked great for me and my best friend the two years we lived together.

^if this affects his porn downloads then he wont do it. I mean im stern with the guy I tell him " dude stop downloading F******** porn i want to shoot some people,!" but as soon as he goes in his room and an hour later, BAM! the downloads begin. He is quite possibly the dumbest person on the planet so either I can:
A) blow up his computer
B) shoot him
C) a combination of A & B
D) limit his bandwidth

i believe your router settings can allow you to do that. as for most of the routers, you can see any comp that are connected to your network and from there you can set control for each individual comp. you can set your own rules. as for my router (actiontech), i can set different controls for 4 of the comps in the house. i can block any websites, limiting FTP, schedule days/time for internet access, filter MAC addresses and more.
you can try by inputting your IP in the address bar, it will lead you to your router setup page. enter username/password. if not, enter "admin" by default. -
Yeah I have set my router up and done some tweaking to make it faster but where exactly do i go to reduce his bandwidth?
-
Assuming you both pay for the connection, I don't see how he could disagree to do that. (To be fair you should both install it, so you can't use all the bandwidth either)
And you don't have to split 50/50. Setting each to a max of, say, 80% of your total bandwidth should be fine Games don't need much bandwidth, and as long as you don't hit the absolute max, your ping won't be affected. -

My linksys router allows you to control bandwith using QoS. Check your router set up page to see if it has something similar.
To get to router set up type in address bar 192.168.1.1 the user name and pass word are "admin" unless you have changed them. -
Here is a better question: who pays for the internet connection/hardware?
If the answer is the both of you splitting it, then what you can do is get a limiter and split the bandwidth in half. It would not be fair for you to take anymore bandwidth when you're only paying for half.
But if you pay the entire bill, then sit him down and tell him what's up. You're paying for the services and you expect your gaming to be working smoothly. If he can't understand that, then cut him off completely or make him pay for part of it to make up for your decreased bandwidth.
On the other hand, if he pays for it entirely, then you better not dare bring up the issue about him taking up the bandwidth with his pr0n. -
Hey, if it's porn he's downloading I say he's got first priority
.
Anyway, if you can't set restrictions in your router software, I would also recommend convincing him to install Netlimiter or similar. I used it on my old computer to keep a few applications from crippling my regular browsing. -
Guys, again please keep in appropriate in here...
-
If he fails to listen to you, then just use MAC filter on your router so only you can get on. I you can just disable it when you not using or not there.
-
Most routers have QoS settings that you can use to give priority to certain ports, MAC addresses, or local IP addresses. Set Skype and games on the highest priority and downloads on something lower.
How much bandwidth is availiable to you guys? -
Instead of port blocking, can't you block the most comonly used URL's that he's downloading from through the router?? Instead of parental control, this would be roomate control. -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
who is paying for the internet?
-
Actually I do, when HE HAS some money he throws in but most of the time i pay. But i dont care if he uses it i just want to limit what he can use, secretly!
-
unfortunately our router doesnt have QoS because it is a crap belking 54G i guess i should go and get a better anway, thanks for all the help Ev1!
-
If you're paying then sit down and talk to him about it. if that doesn't work, then try and limit his bandwidth or something.

I hope i'm not your roommate.
<---Downloads stuff all day over a Belkin Wireless router. -
you could always install a virus which makes him afraid to download more...
