It's the wireless card from what it sounds like. Hopefully you got the AHCI driver as you were installing Vista, and then found the right driver for your wireless card. That or it's a garbage one.

Even with indexing off, a fresh vista install needs time to "cure" so to speak, the disk thrashing should stop after a day or two of normal use.

    1. Download the SP1 offline installer, if you don't have it.
    2. Go to the manufacturers website and download the LATEST drivers. Some manufacturers place all drivers for a particular model together. This means there may be device drivers for several vid cards and/or wireless cards together. Be sure to download the drivers for the exact hardware you have.
    3. Format the partition.
    4. Re-install Vista
    5. Install Device Drivers
    6. Reboot.
    7. Install SP1
    8. Reboot.
    9. Run Windows Update. Be careful it doesn't offer you an older device driver.
    10. Reboot.
    11. Install Firefox. Be patient if the software (not the connection) is laggy, until Vista settles down in 3 or 4 hours. Just leave the computer on. No need to turn off indexing.

Im with you on this one ... Install Clean Vista ... Update Vista with Offline SP1 , then do all the other update needed for WINDOWS , then install the proper driver for you hardware ...

Then install firefox .. or try IE , see if there's a difference in speed ..

    Hope this help

The issue with installing SP1 before the drivers is that SP1 has issues with older drivers. This issue can cause an upgrade failure, or an endless reboot cycle. Installing the LATEST drivers first prevents both these possibilities.

I also forgot a very important step:
    12. Use drive imaging software to create an image of your computer on an external HD or burn to DVD so you don't have to go through this again! :)
