Nvidia is providing Windows 7 drivers through Windows Update from what I've read on their website and my notebook which has a Nvidia GeForce Go 6150 gets the 98.15 driver installed when I install the Windows Update driver. That seems to be a very dated driver (appears to be the same driver version HP has on their website for Win Vista). I was just interested to see what driver versions other people get for their Nvidia graphics card with Windows Update. Mainly want to know about notebooks but if someone here is talking about their desktop, just specify. Trying to figure out what is the newest/latest driver Nvidia has "approved" for notebooks in Windows 7. Please specify your graphics card as well.
I wasn't sure whether this is the section for this thread but figured Win 7 users will mainly come here so this might be better than the Gaming thread as this is not related to Gaming at all but mods go ahead & move it if you feel it's better suited in the other section. :)

I'm using Dox's optimized nVidia forceware 181.20 from laptopvideo2go (GPU noted in sig). I haven't touched windows update yet though so I'll be looking very closely at what it tries to install when I do. And if it tries to install a different nvidia driver I'll pull the plug on it, I had problems with update doing that on my old Acer...

I'm running an nVidia NVS140m on a Dell Latitude D830. I tried both the driver provided by Windows Update on 7 and the 64-bit download from the Dell Support site, but neither of them want to activate Aero. They also refuse to let me set my color depth to 32-bit (I'm stuck at 16-bit, no matter what resolution I choose).

Are there any known solutions to this? I've tried the registry hack but it didn't do anything for me at all.

Have you tried drivers from laptopvideo2go.com? Those are generally the best and most up-to-date; download a 64-bit Vista driver (32-bit Vista if you're running Win7 32-bit). I'm running 181.20 from that site right now and Aero works just fine with it, although it has caused one Blue Screen of Death thus far so you may want to try a different version.

Unless you've got an external monitor, or the D830 has an unusually high-quality display, I doubt you'll notice a difference with 32-bit colour. Most laptop displays are limited to 6 bits per red/green/blue per pixel, which is essentially 18 bits of colour. So you're already pretty close to your maximum colour gamut on 98% of laptop displays with 16-bit colour. But the video card drivers probably will allow you to choose 32-bit.
