I have searched this forum and cannot find more than one post with "registry" in the title, which I find remarkable all by itself.
I know that PC Tools' Registry Mechanic 7.0 only offers "basic support in Vista." I have run my current 6.0 infrequently and had to roll back my system several times because it screwed things up.
But I know the registry is degrading, just by the feel of things. How are you folks coping with registry degradation?![]()

CCleaner here.

I am going to use TuneUp Utilities 2007. Designed for Vista and excellent at keeping registry cleaner than it would be without.

The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Advanced windows care and ccleaner.
-
I use CCleaner, and registry repair, along with registry defrag to keep my system fast noi matter how many programs i test out.
-
-
It's not like it really makes a difference anyway. -
Yeah CCleaner is kinda crap itself when it comes to cleaning the registry. it was made for temporary files and that's only what it's good for. The other utilities will help you a lot, just like they sped up FF and my whole machine for me.

Only when you install/unistall too many programs, you can do a registry clean.
Ccleaner, windows one care safety scanner all do the job well. -

I used Registry Repair and it found 283 errors!
I'm going to restart and see it if perks up the system. -

That's not an unreasonable number, even for a fresh install of XP or Vista. Be wary of cleaning up ActiveX errors (IMHO ActiveX is almost an error all by itself, but that's a different topic).
I use a couple of Reg Cleaners (see my website), but still recommend that those who do not understand the ramifications of using them to leave them alone.
A sluggish system is unlikely to be registry-related. It is far more likely to be related to Indexing, Recovery Points, Disk Fragmentation, Virus Infection, Trojan Infestation, SpyWare Infestation, or some offending software the user has installed. -
Anyway, the registry consists of hundreds of thousands of keys. How much of a slowdown do you think 283 extra ones could cause?

I use Registry Clean Expert and it fixed a lot of weird problems on my XP system. I also defragged the registry but I didn't notice a performance boost.

I downloaded Registry Repair 2.5 and did a scan. It shows 48727 problems found.......what should I do
?
-
^Nothing. Theres a 99% chance that the majority of those problems aren't really problems.
Delete the wrong ones and you mind as well poor water on your laptop. Well not really, but you know what I'm saying.
If your really concern with the registry and don't really know much about it, then just use CCleaner. Very basic. -

CCleaner is also no good......messed up my registry twice....!!
How am I to recognize which is good and which is bad ? -

Again, The answer is that if you don't know what you are doing in the registry you should not be there doing it.
CCleaner did not mess it up; you did. -
Registry cleaners don't even clean up all of the invalid registry entries anyway. I'm starting to see that there's not that point in using them.

I like using them to clean out the MRU (most recently used) histories and the like.

Well,
I must admit I like RegVac Registry Cleaner- he(Ray Geide) did a great job when he wrote this and keeps it updated. I also like Tuneup Utilities 2007, esp. some of the extra features that come w/ it- start up manager, etc. The 2008 version is soon to be out. Email me if you need RegVac....... -
2008? No it's not, 2007 was only released a few months ago
-
I have a very clean system, have never had a virus. I used to defrag regularly too, but have run into the same problem with Diskeeper not being totally reliable under Vista. May try the Vista version again soon. -

What are you doing about the registry in Vista?
