    What could it be?

So my laptop was working fine yesterday morning. I came home from school and it would not boot into vista. It would boot into 7 so that is what I did. I went to "my computer" and the C and D partions were both gone. So I shut down 7 and went to the preloaded recovery software. I tried reinstalling vista on the C partion 3 times with no luck. It would say it was done, but as soon as I rebooted, it would go right back to the recovery screen. The recovery software would not allow me recover the whole HD. I tried using the supplied recovery disc with the same results. Now when I try to boot my computer, I get no dual boot option. It just goes straight to the recovery screen and then it says ERROR is big red letter across the screen. What do you think my problem could be?HDD?

    Quite possibly the hdd.
I would recommend you try running a utility for your hdd and check for problems.

Since you have obviously repartitioned the hard drive, could it be that the recovery software is expecting to find ONE big partition and failing because the C: partition is no longer the size it expects?

it was working fine. And then all of a sudden the data on the C and D partion was gone. I partioned the D to D an E to use E for windows 7. It is down at a computer repair place now to see what they think is wrong with it.

Retrieve any data possible from a Linux LiveCD or something. That's what I'd do. And then use GParted or something similar to check out your partition configuration (or lack thereof). You can also switch boot flags around with that. Have you tried anything with the Windows disk, or is that what you meant by the supplied recovery disk?

it will not do anything. I can not get into either windows to run any program. I tried to recover the C partion with windows disc to no avail. It would not let me recover the whole HD.
