I've never used Windows 7 or Vista (or the non-classic Star Menu in XP) until today, and I've noticed as I install and use things the apps showing up in the start menu seem to change randomly. Is it based on most recent usage? Most frequent usage? Is there any way to make it fixed to a few specific applications?

right click an app of choice "pin to startmenu". works in the main-section as well as in the "all programs" section.

and yes, there are most recent items, too. rightclick the taskbar, go to properties, and in the second tab, there are tons of configuration settings for the startmenu.

you really missed something the last 9 years. xp startmenu was a big + to the ordinary one, and so was vista/win7 to the xp one.. have fun getting used to it, it's nice.

I'm pretty sure it's a combination of most commonly used and most recently used run through some sort of algorithm. That, with jump lists, make the start menu that much more useful.
