I am distraught, how could Google do this?
Not only did they make it easier to read, they made the buttons bigger so they're easier to click, those scallywags! -
And I love the avatar. -
Google was my numero-uno search provider up until Live Search / Bing started producing more accurate results for me in searches. Personally, I like the bigger look. But that could be because my eye-sight is gradually degrading or the fact that the resolution on my screen is so high to begin with
.

I just hope Google does not fiddle around with the Gmail interface like they did with their Search Page. Now THAT would be a big problem for me!

they care for readability and usability, that's why they made that update. obviously, for gmail, a simple zoom would just reduce usability, ergo, they wont do it. doesn't mean they wont update the ui if they find something that helps.

This is what Microsoft deals with whenever it changes anything in the Windows UI. LOL
Edit:
This thread reminds me of two guys, Jakob Nielsen and Jonathan Levy, who were studying the whole "Performance v Preference" effect. Coincidentally, there paper was called "Measuring Usability: Preference vs Performance." They noted that people in general are rather poor at discriminating between features they preferred to features that actually enhance their performance. Generally people prefer designs based on many factors, few if any have to do with enhancing performance.
Case in point. Studies show the DVORAK keyboard can increase typing speed up to 30%. Ask a person if they are willing to improve their typing speed up to 30% and they will of course say yes. Ask a person if they want to switch to a DVORAK keyboard and they will probably say no, due to factors having nothing to do with performance. -
I guess i like it... idk, it doesnt really matter.

it has harmonically arranged keys so that that you're much better at playing (and reaching trough it's 2dimensional layout) correct keys for playing music (any accord is the same finger layout, no matter on what base tone you want to play it).
now guess what?
it's
a) much better to play, as it's much more logical for the brain, and thus you can improvise/compose much better and
b) it's not the default keyboard, so everyone around me who played ordinary keyboards thinks it's the biggest crap ever, as it's very illogical designed.....
people don't like change, even if it's for the better, no especially if it's for the better.
the new google page helps everyone who needs help, and doesn't hurt anyone, but it is change. if you think how much cry in here about that, it's impressive that obama got voted at all, while change being his main motto(no political discussion here, just noting that when ever you "change" something, people start to cry everywhere).

btw, about choices, and if we're actually able to make them:
Dan Ariely @ Ted: Are we in control of our own decisions
(and about our economy, because it fits a similar scheme)
Dan Pink @ Ted: On motivation
so a lot of people in here hype things, and don't like change (but love apple, as it's "best", and win7, and all that). most of them do it because of others who say the same, and they want to fit, to get respected, and feel smart. not even planned to do so.
that's why, as a user, software developer, network admin, and supporter, always try to get people to lose all their thoughts and just think "what do you really want to reach?". ah, you want that, so lets see how you can get the most simple way there, so that it fits you best.
and that's why i'm often on the other side of all the hypes (recently, the win7-taskbar hypes). while it's a cool thing, it's not the "best thing" for the task it should deliver. ergo, it's a fail.
but most people don't think about it without letting their passion getting in their way (oh, it's a macbook. they're great. an iphone? it's the best phone existing. microsoft? damn monopoly!! google? they steal our data!! facebook? steals our privacy! facebook changed their ui?! MAKE A HATE GROUP AGAINST IT!!! 16:9 screens? they're great for movies, and have a HD READY STICKER ON IT!! they must be cool!! they're shiny?? YEAH, THAT'S GREAT!! msn wants me to update to a new version? has to be a CRAP VERSION AS THEY SURE MADE IT WORSE! etc..)
people like to be sheeps, even when they want to "not be a sheep" (think of all sort of outsider groups, or extremist groups even).
but in the end, it's about computers, and about USABILITY. so, the new page is better to use for a broader range of people => it's better.
there is no "i like" or "i don't like" at all, that has space in there. it's a page which is designed to be one thing: to use. a textbox, a button, done. make them big, to make them usable. -

it was no rant btw, it was an analysis why certain things happen the way they do. (and how it could be wrong, and we could maybe do better, yes..maybe a little rant
).
edit: it's just very interesting to see the same behavior in people everytime, no matter if it's politics, shopping, computers, clothing, people, doesn't matter. people like to not think, but just check what the global "fact" is, and take that. and don't like change, except if the global "fact" is, that it's a cool change. -
There should be an option "I don't really mind". I have no problems with it.

it would be interesting to see the result, if google had asked in previous if you want the new, bigger, better to read, cool page, or the old, boring, same tiny page that it was since ages.
people would have voted all for the new one, all and everyone in here stating "the new one sucks". if you don't believe me, check the ted i quoted from dan ariely. -
