Is there an email program where you can pull back the mail if it has not been opened? Or, is this only possible on MS Exchange (if I remember correctly)?

the 'problem' is that it is easy (default?) for end users to shut off mail return receipt notifications.

The only way this really works is in a corporate environment where the admins have forced-on the return-receipt notification/logging and prevent the end users from shutting it off. This works for exchange/outlook, notes, and even most simple pop/imap installations.

But as soon as an email message transits an external system, you lose this kind of notification.

Yawn. msgtag is pretty sneaky and again, if your users have any kind of admin access or control of their machines it is very easy to circumvent or disable.

msgtag has also been known to harvest email details (including content!) and send them back to the software makers servers for their own purposes. as such, msgtag is often flagged as malware by the anti-malware software vendors.

I am not looking to attach stuff like msgtag but for an email provider that has such built into the platform, like gmail would have such a notification feature that mail has been opened..

Wanna bet? You can send as many emails to me as you want with msgtag and you won't get any notification. Thunderbird (pretty much the only good email client out there) by default blocks all external content and scripting, and being as that is the only way that msgtag can work, well, hey. No joy. And if I have to load external content to get your email, it gets deleted. Good times.

Safe-Mail is an excellent email service that gives you notification that mail has been read. www.safe-mail.net I use it for highly confidential communications and when I need a higher level of security for my communications.

Safe-mail provides the following functions, features and benefits:
    • Feature-rich secure e-mail system including security of attachments providing private end-to-end e-mail communication among Safe-mail users and between Safe-mail users and non- Safe-mail users.
    • All messages are registered and tracked with read receipt so that users know when their e-mail are delivered and opened by recipients.
    • Address Book with secure grouping and sharing facility so that users' private address books may be securely exported and imported between Safe-mail users.
    • Folders and nesting of sub-folders enabling users to organize archived data content.
    • User level Authentication facility enabling users to filter communication and data access to specific user groups.
    • Scheduler with secure sharing facility enabling users' schedulers to be securely fully synchronized.
    • Secure Message Boards (Bulletin Boards) enabling users to open and administer their own bulletin boards.
    • Brief Case - document sharing with version control enabling users to securely collaborate in the construction of documents and project planning
    • Strong state-of-the-art data encryption (Patent Pending) giving the most powerful protection to the storage of users' data content.
    • 100% PKI compatibility providing unequalled privacy to Safe-mail users when communicating with each other and with non- Safe-mail users.
    • Back-Office for administering domain operation, users' accounts and usage reporting.
