imo gmail is by far the best one... its just a google amount of options calendar, word, excel, mail, etc, etc... and its so darn fast...

if u are concerned about the pages u registered the hotmail account, just make hotmail to forward all mail to the new account.

i wouldnt use anything else than internet mail, just bcause its faster.. in a desktop app u hacve to dl all mail to watch it... imagine to dwnload 10 megas of video, just to see that its a "god save u" message :p

Well, I can't provide anything specific, but currently...

I'm using Gmail with Thunderbird and I love it. The best part about Gmail is that it archives literally everything. Once, I had to retrieve a paper for my portfolio at the end of the year, but I had formatted the hard drive since I had handed it in. Trusty Gmail had it because I had emailed it to myself when I had been working on it.

Saved my arse on multiple occasions.

Seems there is no way to forward email for hotmail... Bleh... I wonder why i've been with hotmail for so many years and its so outdated. I was thinking of switching to gmail or yahoo a month ago (for iPhone compatibility) which is why i made a yahoo email. The thing about gmail, it didn't even let me use underscore _ to make a new email account :(. I've been using underscore for a long time and use the same basic email name on yahoo and hotmail. I'm deciding to make a switch, so it's gonna be lame having to configuring all my accounts to change the email :\ including this forum account.

I still wondering what to choose. With hotmail, i can see how much mail i have before even logging into my computer, and then i can check again if i have any new emails whenever my MSN messenger pops up.

About google and yahoo... Currently, my home page is google and i use it as my main search engine, but yahoo has a search engine (which i'm not familiar with) and local weather, news, etc... lol. I guess its just that i'm not used to these things yet, so i'm not very willing to change... What do you suggest as using my home page? (sorry if it got out of topic from email)

Edit: I guess google does have a rather nice homepage if you actually adjust it, didn't know that.

I use gmail and have imap and smtp setup on my laptop, phone, and desktop all through outlook so that they all stay synced. No other email provider can do that. I love gmail.

Gmail is the best (IMHO). I love the conversation style. Makes finding important messages way easier since I don't have to sort through tons of messages.

Hotmail is not outdated at all.

Both Hotmail and Gmail has its own advantages, some stuff Hotmail has and Gmail doesn't, and some Gmail has and Hotmail doesn't. Personally I like Hotmail more. And if you like the classic Hotmail interface, then you will not like the one from Gmail. Also, I really don't like how Gmail stacks the emails for you, and I prefer folders over labels.

People who thinks Gmail offers more, it's not true, I guess they didn't look at all the Windows Live services.

Should probably be a multi-option poll, I use all of them. Goes:

    - GMail
    - Hotmail
    - Yahoo! Mail

Converted from Hotmail to GMail in 2005 because of the minimalistic interface, AJAX, cleanliness, and massive storage space.

Heh, i thought it would be unanimous for gmail. The problem with hotmail is it doesn't work with my iPhone mail, and i think it doesn't work with other stuff like outlook either. Also i heard the security on hotmail isn't that good?

I don't know which hotmail u r using but the one I use has the option to forward mail. I use hotmail and it does what I need it to do...that's why I guess i'm not interested in other e-mail services like the ever popular gmail. I don't need many features to send and recieve e-mail. So according to what u do, and what u need, that should be the reason in u switching email services. You shouldn't feel embarassed to be using hotmail, even if u had been using it since u were small. For instance I work at a Trust Company, and we have clients [Other Companies], and some of them are actually using hotmail as their email service to do business. sad but true....So, as I like to say...to every man his own. It's what you need, and what works for u.

BTW, I use Outlook 2007 at work, and hotmail for personal use.

iPhone I'm not sure, but Outlook yes, you need to download this from MS.

About security, in fact Gmail has way more security holes than Hotmail. There are many articles about that on the Internet.

It's in the Options, under Manage your account:

One thing though, you can't forward to any email you want, only to MS domains or domains that's using Windows Live Custom Domains service.

As i've said in my post before choosing an e-mail client is really up to what u desire and need from it. I have had an account w/ the ever popular gmail service for some time now...i'll say like within a month of its initial launch..so i'm guessing since '06 or so. And since then the only advantage I saw w/ it over hotmail was the storage space. But now, they've added some more features and I honestly believe that since then they are now better than hotmail overall. I've used yahoo as well and it's ok but some stuff like simple auto-forwarding is a *plus feature that involves money, whereas gmail has it for free. So if i'm gonna vote on this poll i'll have to give an unbiased vote for gmail w/ it's plethora of features; even though I don't use it. It seems better!

If it's anything I hate about gmail though is its *Spam* and the ugly *User Interface*...it's plain and boring! but it seems to have more features than the rest so I guess that makes it better. I don't need those features so hotmail is fine for me.

Yahoo sucks. They deleted my entire inbox (from an old e-mail) because I didn't log-in for three months. Thing is, it would have been nice to know that from something else other than getting deleted.

Hotmail sucks just as much. I've seen toenail fungus ads pop-up. Not only that, but spoofing is much easier to get away with on hotmail, it is slower, makes you look like a pre-teen, has intrusive ads, and doesn't allow you to forward e-mails to anything other than hotmail e-mails which is utterly useless.

Gmail is superior in nearly everything.

All three Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo have a policy to delete all emails from inactive accounts of 3-6 months, I forgot which one is 3 and which one is 6. When you sign up, you can read it in their policies, it's also in their help site.

Let me clear some things up...

    Windows Live Hotmail
    - You CAN forward emails, but only to
    [IMG]
    - AFAIK Hotmail does NOT offer free POP3 forwarding
    - Account gets deleted after 120 days of non-use (Source: pic above)
    - I like the interface better than Yahoo! and Gmail.

    Yahoo!
    - Can NOT forward email to another account
    - Does NOT offer POP3 forwarding for free
    - Because of the above two, I switched years ago to Gmail
    - I like the interface better than Gmail
    - email account deleted after 4 months
    Source: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/account/account-04.html

    Gmail
    - Free email forwarding
    - Free POP3 access
    - I don't like the interface
    - Unclear when account gets deleted from inactivity:
    Source: http://www.google.com/mail/help/terms_of_use.html

So, in terms of features that are important to me, gmail is the best. Although I do not like gmail's interface, I use Outlook 2007 to manage my email, so I never have to log in to gmail and deal with the interface. I used to use Thunderbird as my email client (and I highly recommend it), but I have recently switched to Outlook 2007. I changed all my subscription emails (I used to use Yahoo! before using an email client) to a gmail address so I can download them with Outlook for free.

From the last time i used Gmail (March):

Hotmail has the ability to crate custom folders.

    Hotmail has different colour choices

Hotmail can automatically sort into folders.

    Hotmail works seamlessly with WLM

    Other stuff... it's just better

You can link up to 5 Hotmail accounts together, that's my favorite feature from Hotmail that Gmail doesn't have.

SkyDrive and Mesh are another Live.com services that are ahead of Google.

I don't know how it works either, but I'm just reporting what Yahoo! officially says. To them it probably means something along the lines of "we can delete your account after 4 months", but that doesn't necessarily mean they will.

And 10,000+ spam emails in your inbox!? I don't get any at all...

EDIT: Yahoo! Mail Plus never gets deleted... is that what you have? Also, if you log in using your Yahoo! id (even if you don't check your email), it should register as logging in thus restarting the 4 month thing.

Well, you can look at the discussion in this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=145075

Or, you can start a new poll with Outlook 2007 instead of (or in addition to) 2003.

Speaking of Thunderbird, I have noticed some thing I don't understand.

It appears if I open email on my server, but later download it with Thunderbird, it occasionally places the test of the email in an attachment, which I can't even open.

Why on earth would Thunderbird do that?

Also, I notice if I reply using Thunderbird, there is no Date/Time stamp on the email I'm replying to.

GMail has the ability to create Labels, which are better than folders.

And? It's like saying Macs are better than a PCs because an Apple a day keeps a doctor away.

    So can GMail, into lables.

    GMail works seamlessly with GTalk.

I agree, GMail is just better.

    Yeah, probably.

I've never given this email to anyone, or any website. I just created it to have the username lest someone else gets it before me.

    No.

I never user Yahoo! for anything. Don't use Yahoo! Messenger, or Yahoo! X, or Yahoo! Y.

I used Thunderbird for years (and Netscape before that, and MCIMail before that, and PROFS/OfficeVision in there somewhere, too), but switched to Outlook 2007 last year. I did that because I did not want to run all the extras (BirdieSync, et. al.) to get my Address Book/Contacts, Tasks, and Calendar in one place. Since my WM5 PPC is the main repository of those data stores, and Outlook syncs out of the box, Outlook was the logical choice for me.

Gmail is the best. I have like 3 gmail addresses.

And a yahoo, hotmail, and school webmail address :p

Thunderbird is good. Outlook 2007 is nice too though. If you don't want to spend money though, get Thunderbird.
