Well it's more common and catered to businesses IMO. But you can add/configure e-mail accounts to it; for ex. hotmail accounts, I suppose g-mail and yahoo accounts also and also registered domain name e-mail accounts (mostly for businesses).

Outlook can only be configured and checked on the PC it's loaded on right? I know you can configure windows Live to check your outlook emails somehow too.

Personally, I just stick with a forwarding all my website emails to Gmail then:
    (1) Have them automatically labeled based on my custom set filters
    (2) Have my gmail account automatically reply to messages from the email address they sent it to. (so you never worry about replying to an important message as [email protected] or w/e your gmail name is :p )
    (3) Always access gmail from any computer anywhere

Good gmail article on setting up forwards, labels, filters, and managaing all your accounts

Great email searching too (which I'm sure outlook has also). Plus mad spam protection. I dunno, Gmail has been kind to me with the 5 email addresses I forward to it, automatically label, and skip the inbox to their respective labels so I don't get overwhelmed.

Would be happy to learn more about what outlook has to offer.
Would also be happy to help a budding webmaster out with gmail too.
    (Any web host + email forwarding + Gmail = money :D )

Gmail has the best spam blocking of any of the major free email host around. Outlook is a pretty decent e-mail client, but I prefer just using Gmail from the web client.

Well yes and no...as I mentioned above; IMO it's mostly catered to businesses. If you have a registered domain name w/ an Exchange Server (as a business would) you can log into your Outlook e-mail via a Web Browser from any computer, anywhere...this feature is a part of Exchange Server itself. Now if you don't have an Exchange Sever you wouldn't be able to check your e-mail via outlook on another computer unless you set it up and configure it w/ the e-mail accounts you choose.

Edit: In the end, it all comes down to how you configure it and how you plan to use it.

I agree. I'll chalk two points up to microsoft for OneNote and Groove though.

Specifically answering this question, the answer is no, no no.

Outlook checks email accounts that you already have.

like nizzy said it can collect all your emails. For me i have optimum, hotmail, gmail, nyit and aol email all going right into outlook. Then it also has a calender contacts and task. which is great if you have a windows mobile phone. All i have to do is put my contacts into the computer and my appointments and it will automatically sync them with my pocket pc. This comes in handy when you get a new phone. You can also make a backup of everything and put it onto a different pc.

All my email organisation is around MS Outlook. I really do like it. At the click of a button it checks three email accounts and you can organise contacts and have a schedual with the calendar. It is aimed at business users, but as a home user who heavly relies on email and organisation I would never look past MS Outlook.

I've found outlook works great for business-oriented use (especially meeting arranging etc) but it's not so hot as a home client where you've only got the one email address to check.

That's why I love the internet:

    Free Skype video conferencing
Free Google Docs to work or view a slide show presentation across the globe
Cheap web hosting via Bluehost or GoDadddy or what have you
Free WYSIWYG html editors like NVU
Free web analytics javascript via Google Analytics to track website worthiness

And throw in some worthwhile microsoft programs to tie it all together like file-sync via Groove and note sharing out of OneNote and your business toolbox just exploded with possibilities. Did I forget to mention wikipedia for any detailed articles on any topic?

    +1 for the internet :p

If only it did all your work for you......
