Zone Alarm is generally considered the best

Ugh. Zone Alarm is the veriest crap, fit only for fertilizer and dubiously so even for that.

In a recent firewall roundup, Jetico was the only firewall to pass every test. It's free and fully functional, not crippleware like Zone Alarm free edition. The only caveats are that it *is* very configurable, so n00bies are probably going to be lost for a bit, and also that it is in (perpetual) beta. :p

Am using Comodo Firewall here, and have had no issues so far. Only complaints are that it may take a while to figure out the Network Rules section (bit that lets you open individual ports), and that it bugs you when a program launches another (eg. clicking a link in Outlook, which launches Firefox) because it thinks the "parent" program might be trying to hijack the other program for internet access. (Actually a pretty neat feature if you somehow downloaded a trojan that's trying to trick the firewall, I guess.)

You can work around these, though, and the official forums have tons of helpful information. I used to use ZoneAlarm until the TrueVector service kept crashing when I had Azureus running for a while, then I switched to Comodo.
