What happens if I install windows 7 on a new computer using my windows 7 key from my laptop? Can I avoid buying a new windows 7 key by using this method?

usually, microsoft gives you some room for this kind of usage and it would go through. If it hits the ceiling(not sure how many times), you would need to call them and talk your way through. If it is XP, it usually is automatic(no human) and they would give you a new key.

...and that is also a prime example of software piracy.
Even if it would activate, the license wouldn't be valid. Retail license is transferrable, oem is not.
