I have never come across a site that required me to have it.

Do I need to install it? why or why not?

It's for playing (ta-da!) shockwave animations. Those are few and far between these days but some sites still push them out.

Lots of people deinstall it because they think it's so-called bloatware.

Doesn't hurt anything to have it loaded. Approx 15 Mb on disk and nothing in the cpu until your browser comes across one of those old animations.

I remember back in the day, it was petty much for internet mini game websites. At least for what I ran into.
