I keep forgetting to ask what this is, every time I defrag my drive Auslogics refuses to touch this file and the associated bitmap claiming it's locked. My MFT is now around the 70+MB range so I'm wondering why it can't be defragmented and whether there's a performance hit leaving it in its current state?

Master File Table. You screw with that, you may lose all your files.

No way to optimise it at all?

A simple google search for "defrag mft" turns up a lot of information, but I did not see a mention of tools that can actually do this.

Perfect Disk and Paragon do that and i believe other defrag programs also do, but not all. Freeware programs with that function i've never seen. The only free program i remember that could defrag system files was page defrag but i don't thing mft is included on those system files.
What is the MFT?
