Hi,
Just today, my Windows XP completely died. So I decided to download Kubuntu LIVE and to see if I can recover my files. And for the most part I've recovered all of the smaller files by mounting the ntfs partitions, and then copying some files over on my 1GB flash drive. However, there are a lot more other files I want to get off my HD but are much bigger than 1GB. What would be the best way of getting them off? At first I wanted to burn the files, but this doesn't seem to be an option as I can't take the LIVE DVD out & I only have one DVD burner.
Is it possible to setup a network between a Windows XP Laptop & Kubuntu LIVE to transfer files directly over the network? Or could someone explain to me how to setup a portable FTP in Linux? Or any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated! (At the moment, I'm on the laptop)

Since your USB key works, the USB drivers seem to work. Do you have an external HD (like a 3.5" or 2.5" or a pocket)? You could use that. If you have a digital camera, ipod, video camera, psp or some other device with large space? you can use the flash memory from your CF/SD/MMC cards as external flash drives.
You can post files to your hosting service on your domain name, if you have one. You can also use crossover CAT5 cables to connect two computers.
You can get an external CD burner, but I don't know about the driver issues. -
Easiest would probably be to set up an FTP. Google it, I can't remember how to do so on Linux, but it's pretty simple.

why don't you just put the HD into another computer as a slave/secondary drive and copy the files over?
sure sounds like you're doing a lot of work for simple data recovery -
^^^ Agreed. If the HD is still good, and it's just that WinXP is trashed, pop it into another PC. You can even get an external enclosure from CompUSA for <$20 and connect it via USB if you'd prefer.

Ah thanks guys -_-
What is the best way of recovering/transferring my files?
