It's the Release to Manufacturing or Marketing version, meaning OEMs(Dell, HP, etc) are getting the code, and retail DVDs are being made.

Basically it's the FINAL version of Win 7, which is what we will all get come October.

It is not free, and will not expire if you have a valid legal license.

Windows 7 RTM is what you will be buying when it is released on October 22nd. It is NO longer in beta OR release candidate form.

How would one get a valid legal license without paying for it?

    PS Nice edit. :p

well... I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work but, the licence that will come with my laptop is for vista... but then i'll upgrade to win 7 for free... so that mean that the licence works on 7? would it work on win 7 RTM? Or where could i get a licence for RTM and is it as expansive as the normal one(when it's released)?

If you buy a laptop with Vista, you will get a FREE upgrade from Microsoft to Windows 7. All the RTM means is that it is NOT the beta or release candidate version. RTM is the FINAL retail version that consumers will be BUYING.

    I hope this helps.

You should be able to call Microsoft and get a 64bit disc that your license can be used with, though on this matter I'm not 100% sure.

Just to be clear, you won't be able to use the disc unless you have already purchased a license. You can have all the discs you want, but without a license, they won't do you any good.

    You seem kind of confused.

Microsoft Windows has always been an operating system that is purchased. Some people go to a computer store and buy it in a box that has the DVD, registration key, documentation, etc. inside. Others will buy a new computer which comes with Windows.

If you want to use Windows, you need to purchase it, or purchase hardware that comes with it, ie. a PC. You don't get Windows for free. It has never been free. They had an "open beta" for Windows 7 that allowed people to download and install the unfinished product for testing, but these versions expire after a time.

lol i know all that i'll have my licence*(via a laptop i'll buy within a week, but it comes with a 32 bits windows, that's why i want a 64 bits cd to change the version i have, i know i'll have to call microsoft to activate the new windows i'll get)

Don,t worry i know it's not free :p It costs a lot of money to produce and everything ;) My bad i guess i wasn't clear enough XD

if you buy a system right now with vista check with the manufacture to see but most oem's are offering a free upgrade coupon in the box. you must usually mail that in and you will be sent a disc to upgrade from vista to windows 7 though if you know how or want to the upgrade can be done with the same disc. also a full retail boxed copy can also do the upgrade as well and also a fresh without having to do the reinstall trick

That's the trick, i have to re-install another version of vista because it'll come in 32 bits and i can't upgrade to win7 64 if i already have 32. So I wanna install vista 64 to upgrade to win 7 64 :)

You don't have to first install Vista 64 in order to move to Windows 7 64-bit. With your current 32-bit Vista installation, the installation process will actually wipe it out and then proceed with the 64-bit install.

Edit: Do you want to do an in-place upgrade? Doesn't make sense if you already are thinking of wiping and installing Vista 64-bit.

The safest bet is to back up all your important files, then perform a full install of Windows 7. Upgrade installs are a bit sketchy and hit or miss. Or complete miss and epic failure like "upgrading" to Windows ME from Windows 98.

All retail Windows 7 versions come with both x86 and x64 disks. I guess OEM may still be one way or the other.
