press 1 and the borders of the window go away and then press alt+1 and I can put the video in a corner of my screen.

edit: using Media Player Classic Homecinema as well. :D

Windows Media Player 12. It uses less cpu resource than even Media Player Classic when playing hi definition videos. It's looks much cooler than media player classic and it features very tight integration with windows shell. The experience of WMP12 in Windows 7 is simply awesome. Nothing really to compete with it.

For Windows XP/Vista, I prefer Kmplayer with CoreAVC codec to decode high-def videos. It looks much cooler than media player classic and can play everything just like Media player classic, but uses less CPU resource when playing Hi-Def content due to the use of external codec.

For Audio: WMP12 for windows 7. Foobar2000 for all platforms (XP, Vista, Windows7)

I have media player, media player classic, and itunes.

I love media player classic for it's aditional features (press around the numblock and detect various great ways to adjust the image and audio). this is great, espencially for downloaded stuff.

but i use a nice codec pack so everything works everywhere, and mediaplayer is still the default for mp3, f.e..

in itunes i manage my music collections, but a random track i listen with media player.

    quite random, it seems :)

but i like in mpc that i can zoom the image to have borders, and all the image, or no borders, but the image cut (or half/half, or what ever). and the audio shift is a must for me, i've quite some (digtal-tv-recorded) movies/concerts that are off. i'm a dj, and i know how simple it could be to adjust some off audio. with mpc, it is :)

I use the Zune player for music because, well, I have a Zune. I've grown to like the interface a lot though. Even if I stopped using my Zune, I'd continue using that software.

For videos I just use Windows Media Player, nothing fancy.

If you like the zune software interface, try the new Windows Media Center. It has the same features, same visuals, but better interface for multimedia (e.g. videos + music + streaming stuff).

I stop using Zune Software because it uses too much system resources for my netbook. I use Windows Media Player 12, which again, looks very similar to Zune Software.

New as in Media Center in Windows 7? I haven't tried it in W7 yet since I never used it in Vista.

Windows Media Player 12 is sick. It's so bloody shiny.

Think MSFT is finally getting Apple's hint that the entire human population has ADD and likes shiny things.

VLC is also great as it will play anything and everything you throw at it.. only CTRL+F 'n problem is that it's so ugly. It's truly superior software if only the morons who designed the shell weren't so retarded. If they hooked up a shiny/slick shell on it... it truly would be without equal. Oh, and they need to change that stupid icon of theirs, the traffic cone.... lol.

I use foobar2k as my media player (for Windows), and it's awesome because it's totally customizable. I can regulate the colors, the playlist, the lyrics, album art, and library dialogues, etc. I can add plugins as I please. I can change pretty much anything I want.

It just looks and feels so wicked awesome. I wish I had my desktop here so I could post a screenshot of my awesome setup. Weird ... I thought I'd posted at least one in the desktop thread, but I can't find any. :D

Edit: Alright, I found an old laptop screenshot, but my desktop theme is even better.

Right now I'm using the Zune because it works well with the Zune Pass, and I've come to like the interface as well - simple, looks nice, and does the task at hand. Did take a bit of adjusting to after the blue of WMP, though.

My previous favorite was WMP 10, and if I cancel my Zune Pass I'll probably go back to that (keeping the Zune songs in the Zune player should I subscribe again, but only keeping the non-DRM ones in WMP). It's also simple, and works well. I prefer it to WMP 11 for the simple reason that WMP 11's black interface looks ugly against XP's blue Luna interface, whereas WMP 10 fits in very well. If WMP 12 is released for XP I may switch to it, but only after creating a restore point first should it also clash with the interface. The lack of a toolbar mode for it makes me a bit uncertain, but I haven't missed it as much in the Zune player as I expected (media buttons on my laptop help a lot with that), so even if WMP 12 for XP doesn't have a toolbar mode I may like it.

Running XP Home, Media Center isn't an option for me. But I never used it in Vista anyways. I could switch to Vista Home Premium or W7RC at any time, but as music already works in XP and some of my other programs wouldn't in Windows 6.x, that won't be happening no matter how awesome Media Center becomes.

edit: Agreed that VLC needs a better interface and icon. Especially now that they're 1.0, do they really need the orange cone that implies it's still being built?

Video: Windows Media Player 11. It's nice and easy-to-use, and given that I hate installing needless software, it works very well with the Vista Codec Pack.

Audio: Foobar2000. It's light on system resources, very customizeable, has nice syncing with my iPod, and has a very powerful metadata tagger built in.

@pixelot: Ohh, very nice Foobar customizations!

i thought winamp was on top of all media player's but windows media player break winamp wall with 12 v
i thought someone could convince me with another player.... but i find wmp is the best media player out there

Why the deuce would anyone want/need VLC, foobar, and WMP?

Anyways, Winamp isn't bad, but foobar is much more flexible, lightweight, and all-around bad@ss. :D

You're not missing much.. I've only used Windows Media Center once, and that was to see what it was like. Once I realized I had to load some program that just plays media without really being able to do anything else (ie multitask), I closed it and never returned.

In windows 7, they allow you to run it in Windowed mode. It's essentially the samething as WMP and Zune software, but with more features.

I'll give it a try in W7 if I can run it in windowed mode. Fullscreen only is pretty limiting.

WMP 12 in 7 is great for everything, though when watching a movie it seems to use more ram than other media players (a little over 100mb).

Media Center is a great application, IMHO. The purpose of WMC is to give a computer user a TV type interface; it isn't really there to be running in a window as you surf the 'net and work on an Excel document. That's why you usually find WMC being used in a HTPC.

I know it's a bit bloated, but I like how it manages my library. Planning to move to WMP 12 when I upgrade to 7.

    Video: VLC
I like how you can change the aspect ratio and crop (I know MPC can do that. I'm just so used to VLC already)

Yes, I can see how a HTPC would benefit greatly from WMC, but other than that I can't see much of a use for it.

I use foobar2000 and Media Player Classic respectively for audio and video playing for one reason - both of them are highly customizable.
