I am planning to do some youtube movies within the next year or so with someone else. What kind of computer do I need to do movie editing for youtube.

I dont have any knowledge with movie editing so I dont know if it requires a faster processor or more cores or a faster gpu. I do know that I will take up lots of hard drive space so I think a desktop would be better but I'll see when I get there. I will learn editing with taking some classes at the local community college and learning on the job.

tough one. what sort of input video are you using? 4K or 8K RAW, R3D all the way down to cell phone video. what software do you want to edit in and at what level? are you looking to go prim, polished and color correction in Premier or quick and dirty on GoPro apps etc?

for quick and dirty focus on RAM, SSD and CPU fairly equal. for Pro level that gets very dependent on the software you use.

I have no idea yet or what kind of editing software I will use. I do want to get upto 4k video at least since thats where everything is heading.

And what do you mean by input video, like I said, I have 0% knowledge on this. I am not going all professional, just good enough for a start.

So I would need more speed for the HD by going SSD.

by input is your sources and source files. if you are going to use high quality raw 4k input files from good cameras you will need a lot more horsepower than if you are doing something from an iPhone or a go pro camera. for example if I get maximum quality 4K from a studio camera I can be looking at almost 4 gigabytes per minute of input video. meaning I need MASSIVE processing ability and storage to work with these files. however if im editing some crappy phone video clips from a wedding that compressed video can be a gigabyte per hour or less.

SSD will give you speed as where a spinner will give you storage, there is always a trade off.
in my case for heavy editing ( pro level ) I use workstations such as the P70 with xeon CPU's, 64GB of RAM and 3or 4T of internal SSD storage, however for a beginner that is massive overkill. if you are just looking to start out by best recommendation is look at basic editing software and see what looks like what appeals to you and your current needs then pick a system based on that. I would suspect an entery level unit with integrated graphics, 6-8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD or even a 500-1T Spinner will do you to begin learning on.

Oh my budget can easily be over 3-4k usd, no problems with money on that part.

But since I'm a cheap a$$ and get most computer parts or computers used a smaller budget could be better. But if the videos turn out faster or better than its worth is for the higher budget. I might turn this into a part time income.

But since this is about 6 months from beginning.
